Lasell Tops Saints 3-1

The St. Lawrence University volleyball team was defeated by Lasell University in four sets at Burkman Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

St. Lawrence 1, Lasell 3 (25-22, 17-25, 12-25, 22-25)
With the Saints back to full strength after being shorthanded their opening matches, they jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first set. The Saints defense was doing their job, and with the score 17-9, the Lasers had only recorded one kill. Lasell took advantage of St. Lawrence being out of rotation on two consecutive points, and went on a five-point scoring streak. With the Saints up 23-19, the Lasers had gained traction and cut the lead to one, but Vivian Zymeck was able to get two back-to-back kills securing the first set for the Saints 25-22. First-year Julia Giroux totaled four kills at the end of the set.

St. Lawrence started the second set well, with a pair of Zymeck kills, but after a couple aces from Lasell's McKenna McCool, the Lasers pulled ahead 7-4. A few points later a setting error by a Laser cut their lead to 10-8, which is as close as the Saints would be in the set. The Lasers took the second set win 25-17. McCool led Lasell with three kills and four aces.

The Lasers opened the third set on a nine-point run. The Saints had trouble returning serves and fell behind 16-2. From that point on they outscored Lasell 10-9, but the damage was done and they lost the set 25-12.

The fourth set started off with a lot more promise, the Saints looked determined and were holding their own. With the score tied at 10, Lasell pulled ahead on a 5-1 run for a 15-11 advantage. The Saints were able to make a noteworthy comeback in the last moments of the match, scoring four straight points to bring them within one, it was not enough to secure the win, the Lasers took the fourth set 25-22, ending the match (3-1).

"I thought our effort was better today," said head coach Shelly Roiger, "but obviously we are still disappointed with the result. We are still figuring out some positions and roles on the team, and the team dynamics of communication and trust are still an issue. We will refocus in practice next week, and then get after it against Potsdam on Wednesday."

Zymeck led the scoring today for the scarlet and brown with 13 kills and two aces. She also had seven digs, while first-year Lainey Roman had eight, and first-year libero Maggie Layman had 15. Lily Snide did the bulk of the setting, and had 19 assists, while Mattie Porter had five. McCool with 13 kills and eight aces for the Lasers, Morgan Bogli had five blocks, and Maddie Caro had 14 assists.
