Miles Levy and
Max Mogul each scored in the road matchup, but the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team's comeback bid fell short in 3-2 loss against SUNY Oneonta on Saturday afternoon in Oneonta, N.Y.
The Scarlet and Brown fell to 2-1-1 on the year, while the Red Dragons stayed undefeated at 3-0-0.
"We came out and started the game well and then shot ourselves in the foot," said head coach
Mike Toshack "We can't afford to make certain mistakes against such a high-quality team. However, the fight and never say die attitude of this team really shined through and we were unfortunate not to gain a draw. Oneonta is a first-class team and extremely well-coached."
The Red Dragons struck first in the game and gained a 2-0 lead in the opening 32:52 of play. Milton Mancias Magana fueled the effort with a goal and an assist.
At the 53:17 mark, the Saints finally cut into the lead as
Sam Pijpers fed
Miles Levy to give St. Lawrence their first goal of the contest. However, Oneonta scored five minutes later to regain the two-goal lead.
With less than ten minutes left on the clock, the Scarlet and Brown turned up the pressure and got a goal closer once again.
Kyle Graber earned an assist on the goal as he fed
Max Mogul, who ripped home the centering pass to make it a 3-2 match. St. Lawrence was unfortunately unable to find an equalizer in the waning minutes of the match.
Ben Woelfinger stopped seven saves in the effort, while Nate Hanna saved four Saints' shots.
Oneonta held the 14-8 shot advantage and had the 10-6 edge in shots on goal. The Red Dragons also had the 4-3 corner kick edge.
The Scarlet and Brown will remain in Oneonta to take on Hartwick College tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
