Seniors
Marvin Sibanda and
Miles Levy each scored late second half goals, and
Ben Woelfinger provided a clean sheet in net to propel the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over SUNY Geneseo on Thursday night at College Stadium in Geneseo.
The Saints improved to 1-0-0 on the season, while Geneseo fell to 0-1-0.
"Absolutely first class performance on the road!" said head coach
Mike Toshack "The players were brave to get on the ball and play. That was an excellent free kick from Marvin late in the half. The team was most excited about keeping the clean sheet which speaks to their great work ethic and mentality!"
The first half of the contest was a slow one as both teams struggled to get their offenses rolling. Saints forward
Sam Pijpers had three shots in the first half but was unable to get one on frame. Senior goalkeeper Woelfinger kept the game at 0-0 with three saves in the opening 45 minutes of play.
The stalemate was finally broken with 21:38 left in the second half when Sibanda, the defending Liberty League Player of the Year, was hauled down in the Geneseo end. The senior lined up for the free kick and fired a left-footed shot past the outstretched arms of Vincent Maronski to give St. Lawrence the 1-0 lead.
Just over seven minutes later, the Saints doubled their lead when Levy buried a ball on an unattended frame. With just over 14 minutes left in the game,
Max Mogul received a through ball and drew the attention of the Knights' defense and goalkeeper. The sophomore slid the ball over to Levy, who was all alone in front. The captain tapped the ball home giving the Saints the 2-0 lead.
Late in the contest, Geneseo put tremendous pressure on the St. Lawrence defense to get into the game. At the 3:38 mark, a cross flew in from the right and led to four shots in rapid succession, forcing Woelfinger to make two huge saves and the Saints' defense to block away the other chances. The Knights kept pressuring but could not solve the St. Lawrence defense as the Saints held on to the shutout.
Woelfinger made six saves in his first shutout of the 2022 campaign, while his counterpart let in both shots that came his way.
Geneseo held a wide margin in shot attempts to the tune of 15-5 and had a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. St. Lawrence and the Knights each had four corner kicks in the game.
The Scarlet and Brown will head back to the road on Saturday, September 3rd when they travel to Buffalo to take on Buffalo State in a 7:30 p.m. game.
