Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Liberty League Championship Bound!

The No. 10 and third-seeded St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team is Championship bound for the second straight season, after upsetting second-seeded and No. 4 Union 15-9 in the Liberty League Semifinals on Wednesday afternoon in Schenectady, N.Y.

Led by four goals apiece from Ben Murtagh and Jack Hennessey and three goals and three assists from Chris Jordan, the Saints defeated Union for the first time since 2017. Murtagh added two assists, while Hennessey tallied one and picked up three ground balls. Josh Huiatt scored twice and Mark Mahoney and Ben Hutchinson each scored once in the win. Padraic Condon went 9-for-15 from the faceoff circle, while Joe Scarfi picked up four ground balls and caused one turnover.

With two points in the win, Mahoney surpassed 100 career points during his time with the Saints.

Union took the early advantage and built a 5-1 lead after the first quarter of play, but that didn't stop the Scarlet and Brown.

The Saints shut out the Dutchmen 4-0 in the second quarter with back-to-back goals from Jordan, a goal from Hennessey and a man-up tally from Mahoney to tie the game 5-5 at halftime. The Dutchmen attempted to score with seconds on the clock for the halftime advantage, but the goal was waived off due to a crease violation.

St. Lawrence continued its run in the third, racking up 10 unanswered goals to lead 11-5 with 3:24 to play in the third.

Union managed to score two, but the Saints responded with two more of their own, as Hennessey scored his 44th of the season with 16 seconds to play in the third and Huiatt, who opened the fourth quarter with his 29th of the season, giving the Saints a 13-7 edge.

The teams traded goals and the Saints secured the win with a stellar mid-game run.

"Obviously not the start that we were looking for," said head coach Mike Mahoney. "But there was absolutely no panic with this team."

"I could not be prouder of a group of men that are playing for each other and committed to the process. We look forward to the opportunity to play another game as a team this weekend."

Kieran McGovern and Keaton McCann each tallied two goals for Union.

William Helm made eight saves and picked up three ground balls in the win, while Union's Dan Donahue made 13.

St. Lawrence outshot Union 43-33, while both teams picked up 33 ground balls and converted on one man-up opportunity.

The Saints improved to 13-3 on the season, while Union fell to 14-2.

St. Lawrence will move on to face top-seeded RIT in the Liberty League Championship game on Saturday, May 7 in Rochester, N.Y. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
