The St. Lawrence men's basketball team finished fourth in the liberty league and earned a first-round home game, while gaining valuable experience in the 2021-22 season.
The Saints got off to a 7-1 start including winning both games at the Alfred Invite. In league play the Saints swept Clarkson and Skidmore, and split with Union, Bard, Vassar, Ithaca, RIT, and Hobart.
The Saints closed the regular season with three straight wins against Ithaca on the road, and Skidmore and Union at home, to secure home court advantage in the first round of the conference tournament.
After winning both regular season matchups against Skidmore by a combined two points, the Saints fell to the Thoroughbreds in the first round of the Liberty League tournament to finish their season 16-10.
"It was great to get to play a full slate of games after being off in 2021-22," said head coach
Chris Downs. "Having not played in a year, along with having a lot of new faces, we were inconsistent in practice effort, intensity, competitiveness, and chemistry, which led to inconsistent game execution."
The Saints had the second best defense in the league, holding opponents to 62.2 points per game, and less than 29-percent from three. The Saints were also second in the league in blocked shots per game, led by
Trent Adamson's 1.9 per game. Adamson was also top eight in the league in points, blocks, and free throw percentage.
"We liked one another as people but at times were immature as a group, not fully trusting or investing in the process or in other teammates. That was addressed after our season, everyone had a good spring and expectations are clear going into 2022-23."
The Saints graduated just one senior,
Luke Hicks, the 2018-19 Rookie of the Year, and a consistent contributor his whole collegiate career.
