No. 10 Saints Edge Cortland 15-14, Advance to NCAA Third Round

Josh Huiatt scored four goals and added an assist and Ben Murtagh scored back-to-back down the stretch to give the No. 10 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse their final lead of the game, en route to a 15-14 win over SUNY Cortland in the second round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon in Brunswick, Maine.

Chris Jordan tallied two goals and assisted on four others, while Murtagh and Judge Murphy scored twice and added an assist. Jack Hennessey, Ben Hutchinson, Stew Hutchinson, Bobby Wells and Padraic Condon also scored for the Saints. Condon went 17-for-25 from the faceoff circle, while Brendan Brigham went 6-for-8. Condon picked up a team-best 10 ground balls, while Hennessey picked up four. Hennessey, Caleb Torres, Conor Temple and Sam Smith each caused one turnover.

The Saints scored the first three of the game, two off the sticks of Huiatt and one from Murphy for the 3-0 lead.

The Red Dragons fought back and scored the next three of their own. After the game tied at three, St. Lawrence pulled ahead by two, but Cortland once again came back to tie the game 5-5, with just 3:43 to play in the second frame.

Cortland held a 7-6 lead at the break. The Red Dragons increased their lead to 10-8, but the Saints scored the final three goals and outscored Cortland 5-3 in the third to take an 11-10 lead heading into the final quarter.

Hennessey tallied his 46th of the season, while Stew Hutchinson and Wells both scored their fourth goals of the season for the lead.

Jordan scored his 40th to give the Scarlet and Brown a 12-10 lead, but Tyler Starrett scored on the man-up to cut the lead back to one once more.

Starrett scored his second of the game to tie it up again at 12-12. Huiatt scored his fourth of the game and his 33rd of the season and the 13-12 lead with 5:24 to play.

Murtagh tallied back-to-back goals and swung the momentum in the favor of the Saints, increasing the Scarlet and Brown's lead to 15-13 with 3:42.

Despite two goals from the Red Dragons' Dante Yacavone and Caden Yancey, just about 40 seconds apart, the Saints held the final possession off a Cortland turnover and held on for the win.



Yacavone led Cortland with three goals and two assists, while Starrett also scored three. Both Alex Thrasher and Matt Amato picked up four ground balls.

William Helm made nine saves between the pipes, while Travis Wagner made 17 for the Red Dragons.

St. Lawrence outshot Cortland 52-34 and converted on all 13 clears. The Saints also picked up 33 ground balls to Cortland's 21, and dominated the faceoff circle, posting 23 wins to Cortland's 10. Cortland scored on 1-of-2 man-up opportunities.

The Saints moved to 14-4 on the season, while Cortland fell to 13-7.

St. Lawrence will advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament and will face Bowdoin College on Sunday, May 15 at 3 p.m.
