Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

No. 10 Saints Nearly Secure Comeback Bid, Fall to No. 9 Bowdoin in the Third Round

Judge Murphy scored four goals, while Jack Hennessey scored three and assisted on three others, as the No. 10 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team nearly caught up with ninth-ranked Bowdoin, but fell 17-12 in the third round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon in Brunswick, Maine.

Josh Huiatt and Ben Murtagh tallied two goals each, while Padraic Condon added a goal and an assist, while also picking up a team-best eight ground balls. Guthrie Little led the Scarlet and Brown with three caused turnovers.

The Polar Bears opened scoring, just 46 seconds into play, with a goal from Oliver Bernstein. But in a game of back-and-forth action from the start, Murphy tied the game at one, but was followed up by a goal from Bowdoin. Murphy scored his second of the game tying it up at two, with a rocket from nearly 20 yards out.

After Bowdoin tied it up once more, Condon scored of the faceoff to knot the game 3-3.

Bowdoin's Chris Fowler scored to give the Polar Bears a 4-3 edge with 6:05 remaining in the first quarter and Bowdoin scored three straight to build a 6-3 lead.

The Polar Bears scored on the transition with four seconds to play to take a 7-3 lead after the first quarter. Bowdoin outscored the Saints 3-1 in the second quarter to build a 10-4 lead at halftime.

After trading goals to start the third, Bowdoin led 14-6 with 5:23 to play in the third, but the Scarlet and Brown rallied hard. Starting with a man-up goal from Huiatt, the Saints scored five straight goals to bring the game within three.

St. Lawrence got within three once more with 5:55 to play (15-12), and Saints' goaltender William Helm made some crucial saves down the stretch, but the Polar Bears would score the final two for the win.

"First I want to congratulate Bowdoin and their coaching staff on a well deserved victory," said head coach Mike Mahoney. "It obviously stings to have things come to an end today, but I am really proud of the fight that these men showed today and throughout the season. They have been through a lot over the last couple of years, and to see them come together and play for each other in all situations throughout the entire season has been really special to see."

"I am very proud of their character, commitment, and dedication through it all," Mahoney added. "Our senior class especially leaves a legacy of leadership that bodes well for years to come. It was a memorable year and the future is very bright as well."

Bowdoin was led by three goals and two assists from Patrick Fitzgerald, and three other members of the Polar Bears' squad also scored three goals.

Helm made 13 stops between the pipes, while Bowdoin's Robert Hobbs made 15.

Bowdoin outshot St. Lawrence 56-47 and picked up 34 ground balls to St. Lawrence's 28. The Saint's capitalized on 1-of-5 man-up opportunities and killed off all three of Bowdoin's chances.

The Saints closed their season at 14-5, after making their first NCAA appearance since 2017. Bowdoin will advance to the Quarterfinals to face RIT and improved to 18-2 overall.
