Charlotte Powell continued her big weekend with six more goals and two assists as the No. 17 St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team defeated Skidmore College 21-13 on Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
The Scarlet and Brown improved to 11-1 on the year and 5-1 in the Liberty League with the win, while the Thoroughbreds fell to 2-8, and 2-4 in league action.
Powell, who scored a season-high six goals yesterday, matched that today to bring her season total to 35 goals. O'Neil scored five goals of her own in the win for the Saints to help lead the way.
The win was the eighth road win for the Saints, who are a perfect 8-0 away from Canton.
The Thoroughbreds did well to start the game on the right foot taking a 3-0 lead in the early going. Elizabeth Walsh, Gabriella Modesti, and Amelia Basset each scored for Skidmore in their hot start.
The Scarlet and Brown came battling back when
Isabel Silvia finally got the Saints on the board with three minutes and 33 seconds left in the opening quarter. The goal helped turn the tide as
Callie O'Neil scored 29 seconds later.
Rachel Burke was next for St. Lawrence as she scored with one minute and six seconds remaining to tie it up at 3-3 after 15 minutes of play.
The Saints took their first lead of the game at the 11:06 mark of the second quarter with a Powell tally to make it 4-3. St. Lawrence and Skidmore would trade the next four goals of the contest as the Scarlet and Brown kept the one-goal edge. With two minutes left in the half, Powell scored her third goal of the quarter to make it 7-5. However, a Thoroughbreds' goal with 37 seconds left made it a one-goal lead going into the half.
After a slower start in the first half, the Saints came out swinging in the second half as O'Neil and Silvia scored opening-minute goals. Skidmore went on the counterattack scoring two of their own to slow down the momentum.
The seesaw match started to tilt heavily in favor of the Scarlet and Brown as St. Lawrence went on a six-goal run to establish a seven-goal lead. Burke scored two goals in the barrage, while O'Neil,
Jacqui Cloutier,
Morgan Arakelian, and Powell each contributed a goal to the effort.
Skidmore's Grace Grbach was finally able to stop the bleeding for the Thoroughbreds with a goal at the seven-minute mark. The two teams traded goals in the last six minutes to make the score 16-10 going into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Powell scored her fifth and sixth goals of the game, while O'Neil,
Neve Ley, and
Ellie Camp also scored to carry the team to the 21-13 win.
