First-year
Broderick Pinto celebrated his birthday by going 2-0, and the Saints went 3-0 in the doubles portion of the match, but the St. Lawrence University men's tennis team narrowly dropped a 5-4 contest to Hobart College on Saturday at the Sammis Tennis Courts and Newell Field House.
The Saints fell to 6-6 with the loss and 2-3 in Liberty League action, while the Statesmen improved to 10-5 and 1-1 in league play.
The day started in doubles, which was played at the Sammis Tennis Courts. At number one,
Nathan Turtledove and
Ben Moolman went to a tiebreaker with Jett Wright and Sean Pesin. The Saints duo won the point 7-5 to take the 8-7 win.
At number two,
Adam Heilbronner and Pinto also went to a tiebreaker point against Hobart's Troy Steiner and Harry Lyu. The Boulder, Colorado natives won the point 8-6 to secure the 8-7 win. Much like the first two, the third match also went to a tiebreaker as
Nico Haet and
John Hill-Edgar battled to a 7-3 tiebreaker win over Thomas Shung and Jack Ledfor to take the 8-7 win.
In the Newell Field House, Heilbronner and
Edvin Strandberg each went to three sets in their respective singles matches, but only Pinto was able to secure a singles win for the Scarlet and Brown. In the final match of the day, Hobart's Nick Grosso and Pinto went head-to-head in the number six spot. The first-year ended up taking the win 6-3, 6-4 to secure his 2-0 day.
The Scarlet and Brown will have a quick turnaround as they will take on the University of Rochester tomorrow at noon in the Newell Field House.
