Nicholas Butler had a triple, a home run, and had five RBI, but it was not enough as the St. Lawrence University baseball team fell 27-8 to RIT on Saturday afternoon in Rochester, N.Y.
With the loss, the Saints fell to 12-7 on the year and 3-4 in the Liberty League, while RIT improved to 14-8 and 4-2 in league play.
The first inning of the ball game featured 14 total runs from both teams. Unfortunately for St. Lawrence, ten of those runs came from the Tigers in the top half of the first. RIT's Blackall accounted for a triple and a home run in the inning and tallied four RBI to fuel the barrage.
The Saints responded in the bottom half of the inning getting four of the runs back. Following back-to-back walks from
Sean Desjardins, and
Chris Watson, Butler smashed a triple to left center field to get the Scarlet and Brown on the board. Following another walk from
Jimmy Liberatore,
Andrew Circelli was able to single home Butler for their third run.
Cristian Forgione accounted for the final run of the inning as his ground out to third base scored Liberatore.
RIT's offense stayed hot putting up five more runs in the top of the second to give them a 15-4 lead.
The top of the order came back around for St. Lawrence in the bottom of the second and Desjardins and Watson once again found the base paths, this time via a hit by pitch and a walk in that order. This time around, Butler launched a deep three-RBI home run to left field to cut into the deficit.
Over the next three innings, the Tigers would steadily add runs to the board en route to a 23-7 lead.
St. Lawrence earned their eighth run in the bottom of the sixth inning when a Desjardins walk followed by a Liberatore double tacked a run on the board.
RIT scored four more in the final three innings to finish the contest.
Andrew Matthews started on the hill for the Saints and pitched one inning. He was relieved by Brendan O'Neil, who pitched two innings for St. Lawrence. After O'Neil,
Dylan Barber,
John Igoe,
Huck Haun, and
Joe Perras all saw time on the mound.
The Scarlet and Brown will look to bounce back tomorrow when they take on RIT once again, this time in a doubleheader starting at noon in Rochester.
