Comerford Walks-Off In Game Two To Give The Saints Doubleheader Split

Andrew Circelli, And Michael Goretti each drove in three runs, but it was Brian Comerford's walk-off RBI single that gave the St. Lawrence University baseball team a doubleheader split on Sunday afternoon in Rochester, N.Y.

St. Lawrence improved to 13-8 overall and 4-5 in Liberty League play with the split, while the Tigers moved to 15-9 and 5-3 in league play.

In game two, Michael Hutchins turned in a quality start pitching eight innings, allowing just three hits, two runs and struck out five but earned a no-decision. Nicholas Butler came out of right field and onto the hill pitching the final inning giving up three runs, struck out two, and earned the win as the pitcher of record.

"This wasn't our best weekend but we found a way to get the last one," said head coach Kenny Collins "We need to find a way to put all three phases of the game together at once. RIT was a tough team and Rochester will be very tough as well. We have a week of practice to get ready for a big matchup."

Game 1: St. Lawrence 6, RIT 11

Following two one-two-three half-innings in the first inning, The Tigers hopped on the board first in the top of the second. With two outs gone, walks came back to bite the Saints as a single and a double scored two runs for RIT.

The Scarlet and Brown would counterattack in the bottom half of the inning scoring five runs to take the lead. Jimmy Liberatore started the attack with a double to left field, then was sent home in the next at-bat by Circelli, who doubled him home. Cristian Forgione did the same moments later launching a double to right center to score the tying run. Two singles from Jake Delaney, and Sean Desjardins brought in two more runs, then Butler joined the double parade to score Desjardins.

RIT didn't stay down for long as a run in the fourth then a seven-run fifth put them up 10-5. The Tigers singled the Saints to death in the inning to take a three-run lead, before a two-RBI home run was launched over the fence to give them the 10-5 edge.

Circelli gave the Saints their sixth run of the day in the bottom of the fifth with a tape-measure home run, but that was as close as the Scarlet and Brown would get the rest of the way.
Jack Sylvia started on the hill for St. Lawrence and pitched four and one-thirds innings striking out three, but giving up nine runs. Brett Parker pitched the final two and two-thirds innings striking out two and giving up just two hits.

Game 2: St. Lawrence 6, RIT 5

Unlike the first two games of the weekend, it took until the fourth inning for either team to get on the scoreboard. In the bottom half of the fourth, the Saints jumped on top with a four-run inning.

Liberatore started the inning with a double, and was moved ahead by a Caleb Clark single. Forgione was hit by a pitch to load the base paths with one out. Goretti came up clutch hitting a three-RBI triple to right center field to give the Saints the 3-0 lead. Delaney would bring the shortstop around to score with a double to increase the lead to 4-0.

Just like in game one, Circelli added a run to the scoreboard with a moonshot. With two outs away in the bottom of the fifth, Circelli was thrown a fastball that he quickly hoisted over the right field wall to extend the lead to 5-0.

The lead lasted until the top of the eighth inning where RIT would get two runs back. The Tigers loaded the bases with a single, a walk, and a hit by pitch. Then, a groundout brought home a runner to break the shutout. The next batter was walked to bring another runner home before Hutchins buckled down and ended the inning with a strikeout and fly out.

In the top of the ninth, RIT came all the way back tying the game at five. The Tigers earned their first run of the inning when a double and a walk turned into a run after Libby Singled to right center field. With two outs gone and runners at the corners, RIT hit back-to-back doubles to make it a 5-5 game.

Desjardins got to work first in the bottom of the ninth singling his way on and was moved over to scoring position with a bunt single from Butler. Next up was Comerford, who came into the contest for Clark, who moved to right field with the pitching change. The senior delivered in the clutch singling to left center field to give the Saints the walk-off win.

Hutchins turned in a quality start pitching eight innings, allowing just three hits, two runs and struck out five but earned a no-decision. Nicholas Butler came out of right field and onto the hill pitching the final inning giving up three runs, struck out two, and earned the win as the pitcher of record.
