Game Recap: Baseball |

Saints Drop Doubleheader At Rochester

Seniors Andrew Circelli and Nicholas Butler each drove in a pair of runs and the Saints hit three home runs, but it was not enough as the St. Lawrence University baseball team dropped both sides of a doubleheader on Friday night at Towers Field in Rochester, N.Y.

The Scarlet and Brown fell to 13-10 on the season and 4-7 in Liberty League play, while Rochester improved to 23-4 and 10-0 in conference action.

Butler had two RBI in game one as the senior launched a two-run shot to left field in the late innings. Circelli had an RBI in each game with the senior hitting a solo home run in game one and walking home a run in the second game of the twin bill.
Game 1: St. Lawrence 4, Rochester 8

In game one, the Yellowjackets jumped on the Saints early scoring five times in the first two innings. Harper Sy drove in the first run for Rochester on a groundout before John Moses launched a two-run home run in the next at-bat.

In the second inning, the lead was ballooned to 5-0 when the Yellowjacket leadoff Aaron Whitley hit a two-run shot of his own.

The Rochester lead got to 7-0 with a solo home run in the fifth, and a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

The Scarlet and Brown bats got hot in the seventh as the Saints hit two home runs of their own. First up was Circelli, who took a 1-0 pitch over the centerfield wall to break the shutout. The very next pitch, Caleb Clark wasted no time hoisting the first ball he saw over the left field wall.

Rochester got their lead back to six runs in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double.

In the top of the eighth, it was Butler's turn to hit a deep ball. Sean Desjardins, who was hit by a pitch was at first base when the senior butler curled a home run around the left field pole to make it an 8-4 game.

That was as close as the Saints would get as Rochester's Jason Cobert shutdown the ninth for the Yellowjackets.

Andrew Matthews started on the bump for St. Lawrence and pitched six innings and striking out three in the loss. Michael Watson came on in relief for an inning before Huck Haun pitched the eighth for the Saints.
Game 2: St. Lawrence 2, Rochester 3

Offense continued to come via the home run ball in game two as a scoreless game through two and a half innings was broken up by a solo shot from the Yellowjackets' Jackson Reed.

The game cruised along until the top of the seventh, where the Saints would take the lead. Chris Watson started the inning with a single before Butler doubled his teammate to third. The base paths were loaded following Jimmy Liberatore being hit by a pitch. Circelli was up next and showed patience earning a four pitch walk to bring in the tying run. Two at-bats later, Jake Delaney laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring Butler in to score.

The lead held until the bottom of the seventh with the Yellowjackets facing their final chance. Rochester found themselves with the bases loaded with no outs via two walks and an error from the Saints. The Yellowjackets would walk-off with the win with a two-RBI single through the left side of the infield for a 3-2 final.

Jack Sylvia pitched six and a third innings for St. Lawrence giving up four hits and striking out four.
