Sophomore
Brett Federico blasted a three-RBI double in the late stages of the game but it was never close as the St. Lawrence University baseball team lost 17-4 to the University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon at Towers Field in Rochester, N.Y.
St. Lawrence fell to 13-11 with the loss and 4-8 in the Liberty League, while the Yellowjackets improved to 24-4 and 11-0 in conference play.
Federico provided two hits in the effort, while the rest of the Saints' hits came from
Caleb Clark,
Jackson Brinker, and
Brian Comerford, who each tallied a hit.
Rochester got off to a hot start in game three of the weekend series dropping 11 runs on St. Lawrence in the first two innings. Unlike yesterday, the offense did not come from the long ball, but instead from the short game as the Yellowjackets drove their 11 runs in with singles, doubles, and groundouts.
Rochester would expand their lead in the third, fourth, and fifth innings en route to a lopsided 17-0 score.
The Scarlet and Brown would finally get on the board in the top of the ninth via that bat of Federico. Clark was first on base in the inning reaching on a throwing error by the third baseman. Brinker and Comerford proceeded to single their way aboard to load the bags for the Scarlet and Brown. With two outs and a 2-2 count, Federico ripped a double to left field that cleared the paths and brought the score to 17-4.
Next up was
Nicholas Butler, who like Clark reached on an error by the third baseman. The senior came all the way around to second on the play, while Federico completed his trip around to home plate at the same time to make it 17-4.
Michael Hutchins started on the hill for the Saints pitching the first inning.
Brett Parker pitched three innings in relief of Hutchins striking out three.
Christian Mingione,
Samuel Fosberg, and
Brenden O'Neil pitched the final four innings of the game striking out three batters combined.
The Scarlet and Brown will have a quick turnaround as the team will travel to SUNY Plattsburgh on Wednesday, April 20th to take on the Cardinals. The non-conference bout will begin at 3:00 p.m.
