Game Recap: Baseball |

Saints Baseball Drops Two Games At Clarkson

Seniors Andrew Circelli, Jake Delaney, and Chris Watson each drove in a run, and Sean Desjardins scored two runs on the day, however, the St. Lawrence University baseball team was on the wrong end of a sweep against Clarkson at Jack Phillips Stadium on Saturday.

St. Lawrence fell to 13-13 on the season and 4-10 in Liberty League play, while the Golden Knights improved to 7-13 and 3-7 in conference action.

Desjardins was able to make the trek around the base paths once in each half of the twin bill for the Saints, while Nicholas Butler led the Scarlet and Brown offense with four hits on the day.

Game 1: St. Lawrence 2, Clarkson 12

The Saints jumped on the scoreboard first in game one in the first inning of action. After Desjardins was hit by a pitch, Butler moved the first-year over to second with a single to right center. With two outs away, Circelli ripped a double through the left side to score Desjardins and make it a 1-0 game.

The Golden Knights responded with three runs of their own between the first and second innings.

In the top of the third, Butler opened the half-inning getting hit by a pitch then was advanced to third off a single from Drew Courtwright and a fly out. Butler finished his trip around the bags as the senior took advantage of a wild pitch to make it 3-2.

That was as close as St. Lawrence would come the rest of the way as Clarkson took the 4-2 lead in the bottom of the third, then scored eight runs in the fifth through sixth innings.

Jack Sylvia started on the bump in game one pitching four innings giving up three earned runs on eight hits and struck out seven Golden Knights along the way. Brett Parker pitched two and one thirds innings in relief and struck out four. Huck Haun threw the final five outs of the contests giving up just one hit and striking out three.

Game 2: St. Lawrence 2, Clarkson 5

It was the Scarlet and Brown, who once again scored first in game two of the twin bill, but the team was only able to get one on the board. Desjardins and Butler once again found their way aboard the base paths to start the game, but this time it was Delaney, who drove a run in. With two outs away, Delaney roped a single up the middle to score Desjardins and take the early 1-0 lead.

The 1-0 lead remained until the bottom half of the third inning when Clarkson's Caleb Doyle drove in a run with a single of his own to knot the ballgame at 1-1.

The tie lasted until the top of the sixth when Michael Goretti found his way across home plate. The senior led off the half-inning with a double to right center, which was followed by back-to-back outs. Goretti then made his way over to third on a balk. Next up to bat was Chris Watson, who reached on an error by the shortstop and subsequently drove in the Saints second run in the process.

The tight game blew up in the bottom half of the six as the Golden Knights posted a crooked number on the scoreboard. Joe Pagano started the offense with a two-RBI home run to take a 3-2 lead. Tommy Bianchi provided a two-RBI double, and Zachary Carpin followed with an RBI single to put the Knights up 5-2 and eventually take the contest.

Andrew Matthews pitched all six innings for the Scarlet and Brown giving up six hits, three walks and five runs.

Next up:

The two teams will finish up the weekend series tomorrow as the series shifts to the friendly confines of Tom Fay Field in Canton. The Saints and Knights will play one nine-inning game which will start at noon.
