Charlotte Powell scored six goals, while
Isabel Silvia scored three, as the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team edged Union in Liberty League action on Friday afternoon in Schenectady, N.Y.
With the win, the Saints improved to 10-1 on the season and 4-1 in conference play, while Union fell to 2-6 and 1-3, respectively.Â
Powell also picked up three ground balls, while Silvia also added an assist, two caused turnovers and seven draw control wins, while
Callie O'Neil and
Morgan Arakelian each scored twice and assisted on another. O'Neil finished with a team-best eight draws.
Callie O'Neil and Powell tallied the first two goals for the Saints and the Scarlet and Brown outscored the Dutchwomen 8-3 after the first 15 minutes of play.
In the second quarter the Dutchwomen battled back, this time outscoring the Saints 5-2, to cut the lead to two heading into the break, 10-8 in favor of the Saints.
The third quarter saw a defensive battle and a lower scoring 15 minutes, as Union edged the Saints 3-1 in the third frame.
After the break, Union's Katie Julien scored to bring the game within one, and despite another goal from Powell, the Dutchwomen scored the next two tying the game at 11-11.
It was Powell, who would once again give the Saints the edge, as she helped cause a turnover deep in the Union zone, broke through the defense and scored her 28th goal of the season to put the Saints up 12-11 with 9:46 to play.
Isabel Silvia scored her second of the game and 25th of the season to give the Saints a two-goal lead just eight seconds later.
Greta Maurer brought the game back within one once more, but St. Lawrence scored the next three, outscoring Union 5-1 in the final frame, to hold the lead and seal the 16-12 win.
Great Heiting led the Dutchwomen with four goals, one assist, two caused turnovers and seven draw control wins.
Raelynn Bovenzi made three saves and split time in net with
Courtney Lynn, who finished with five in the second half. Hannah Dubinsky made eight for the Dutchwomen, while Jenna Paszek made one.
St. Lawrence outshot Union 31-27, while both teams finished with 19 ground balls each and the Saints converted on 18-of-22 clears. The Saints dominated the draws, grabbing 22, to Union's 11.
The Saints will travel to Saratoga Springs to take on Skidmore, tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
