No. 15 Saints Defense Remains Steady in 22-4 Win Over Skidmore

Chris Jordan scored four goals, assisted on four others and picked up five ground balls and the Saints' defense held the Thoroughbreds to just four goals to lead the No. 15 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team to a 22-4 win over Skidmore in Liberty League action under the lights in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. on Friday.

With the win, the Saints improved to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play, while Skidmore fell to 5-5 and 0-3, respectively.

Jack Hennessey also scored four goals for the Scarlet and Brown and assisted on three others, while Josh Huiatt, Mark Mahoney, Ben Murtagh and Judge Murphy each scored twice.  Joe Scarfi also picked up five ground balls and caused two turnovers, while eight other Saints each caused one. Brendan Brigham continued to dominate the faceoff dot, going 11-for-14, while Padraic Condon went 9-for-12 and Jackson Lalonde went 3-for-4.

The Thoroughbreds were first to the scoresheet, with a goal from Charlie McFadden at 11:06, but the Scarlet and Brown would net the next three in a span of two and a half minutes to take a 3-1 lead over Skidmore.

Mahoney opened scoring for the Saints in the second quarter, and was followed up by Murtagh, Hennessey and Huiatt, as St. Lawrence built a 7-2 lead over Skidmore with just over five minutes to play in the second.

The Saints outscored the Thoroughbreds 8-2 in the second frame, building an 11-3 lead at halftime.

Scoring the last four goals in the second and shutting out Skidmore 7-0 in the third, the Saints scored 11 unanswered goals, including a man-up tally from Mahoney, to increase their lead to 18-3 by the end of the third quarter.

The Saints tallied four more goals in the fourth quarter to seal the win, capping a 15-1 run for the 22-4 win.

Junior transfer, Christian Warren tallied his first goal of the season in the win.

"It was a business like effort to go on the road and play well on both ends of the field," said head coach Mike Mahoney. "We look forward to another big challenge next week."

McFadden finished with two goals for Skidmore, while Bobby Meindl finished with five ground balls and two caused turnovers.

William Helm made 10 saves for the win between the pipes, while Michael Marinello finished with four. Collin Kuester made 18 saves and was relieved by Chris Downey, who made four for Skidmore.

St. Lawrence outshot Skidmore 56-28, including a 41-18 advantage in shots on goal. The Saints converted on 30-of-33 clear attempts, picked up 39 ground balls to Skidmore's 34 and killed off all five of the Thoroughbreds man-up opportunities.

The Saints will travel to Middlebury for a midweek game against the Panthers on Wednesday, April 13 at 4 p.m.
