Fourth-Quarter Surge Lifts No. 11 Saints Over No. 19 Middlebury, 18-11

Chris Jordan had a day with six goals and an assist, while Jack Hennessey scored four and Mark Mahoney scored three goals and assisted on three others, as the No. 11 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team defeated the 19th-ranked Middlebury Panthers on Wednesday afternoon in Middlebury, Vt.

With the win, the Saints improved to 9-2 overall, while Middlebury fell to 6-6.

Judge Murphy added two goals and an assist in the win, while Ben Murtagh, Josh Huiatt and Jack Gorman all scored for the Scarlet and Brown. Joe Scarfi and Saints' goaltender William Helm led the team with five ground balls, while Scarfi and Tripp Clark both caused two turnovers. Padraic Condon went 11-for-18 from the faceoff circle, while Brendan Brigham went 6-for-12.

The Saints hit the scoreboard first with back-to-back goals from Jordan and Murphy, with 11:11 to play in the first. The Panthers struck back and tied the game up 2-2 on goals from Bobby Hendry and Tom Conley. Mark Mahoney and Josh Huiatt scored and gave the Scarlet and Brown a 4-3 edge after the first quarter of play.

Much like the start of the first, St. Lawrence scored the first two of the second off the sticks of Jack Gorman and Jack Hennessey, giving the Saints a 6-3 lead. Mahoney scored his second of the game on the man-up, Hennessey also scored with the man advantage and Mahoney sealed the hat trick, as he scored between his legs with his back to the goal to end the first half with a 9-5 lead.

Middlebury came out of the break swinging and scored the first four goals of the third quarter to tie the game 9-9. The teams traded sets of goals and were tied again, 11-11. Hennessey added his 25th of the season and Jordan added his 24th to put the Saints back in control 13-11, closing the third quarter of play.

It was all St. Lawrence in the fourth quarter, as the Saints sealed the game with five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter and seven unanswered on the run for the win.

"That was a good effort on the road, said head coach Mike Mahoney. "Middlebury had a big push back after halftime and I am very proud of our response from that point on. We look forward to getting back into league play at home on Saturday."

Billy Curtis led the Panthers with three goals, while Tom Conley scored twice. Johnny Kantaros grabbed four ground balls, while Teddy Curran finished with three caused turnovers.

Helm made 10 stops between the pipes, while Finn O'Connor made 13 saves.

St. Lawrence outshot the Panthers 44-30, including 31-21 in shots on goal. The Saints also picked up 38 ground balls to Middlebury's 30 and capitalized on 3-of-6 man-up opportunities, while the Panthers went 0-for-1.

The Saints will return to North Country Field to host Vassar on Saturday, April 16 at 3 p.m.
