Nicholas Butler drove in three runs on three hits, while
Jimmy Liberatore and
Jake Delaney each drove in two as the St. Lawrence University baseball team battled to an 11-7 win over SUNY Canton on Wednesday afternoon at Tom Fay Field.
The Scarlet and Brown improved to 12-6 on the season, while the Roos fell to 3-17.
"Today we had great contributions from 9 different pitchers and many of our hitters," said head coach
Kenny Collins "The effort and energy was there, although we are still working through some issues with free bases and playing clean baseball for a full 9 innings. Another big series coming up this weekend versus RIT that we are looking forward to."
Ethan Baldwin started the game on the hill and earned the win for the Saints, but only pitched one inning as the team deployed nine different pitchers in the nine-inning game. Following Baldwin was
Dylan Barber,
Brenden O'Neil,
John Igoe,
Joe Perras,
Samuel Fosberg,
Michael Watson,
Huck Haun, and finally
Brett Parker.
It was Canton, who hopped on the board first as a leadoff walk followed by a double brought the Roos around to score in the top half of the first inning to give them a 1-0 lead. However, it did not last long as in the bottom half of the first Liberatore came to the plate with a runner on second base. The junior hammered a fastball over the wall in left center field to give the Scarlet and Brown the 2-1 lead. Â
The Saints didn't look back from there as they added to their lead in the second.
Drew Courtwright earned and RBI as his sacrifice fly scored
Caleb Clark from third base. In the next at-bat,
Sean Desjardins singled through the right side of the infield to score another run/ The half inning was capped by Butler, who brought Desjardins around to score with a single.
The lead was pushed to 6-1 in the next inning as
Evan Burke singled through the left side to score left fielder
Jake Delaney.
In the top of the fourth, Canton would claw back into the game as the Roos scored two runs to make it 6-3. However, the Saints earned the two runs back moments later as a Delaney walk with the bases loaded, and a sacrifice fly by Clark brought runners to home plate.
The Scarlet and Brown offense kept the momentum as they scored in five consecutive innings. In the bottom of the fifth, the lead was pushed to 10-3 as Butler legged out a double to left field which scored two St. Lawrence runners.
Things got hairy in the seventh inning for the Saints as Canton scored two runs and brough the game-tying run to the plate with the bases loaded.
Michael Watson worked his way out of the jam striking out the last two batters to minimize the damage.
Delaney earned his second RBI of the game in the seventh inning as with runners on second and third with one out, the squeeze bunt was called giving him the sacrifice bunt RBI.
Baldwin earned the win for the Saints pitching one inning giving up one hit, one run, and striking out one. Barber, O'Neil, Perras, and Parker each left the Roos hitless, while Fosberg, and Haun each relinquished a hit a piece.
The Scarlet and Brown will complete their eight-game home stand this weekend as the Saints will welcome RIT to town for a three-game Liberty League set. On Saturday, the Saints and Tigers will line up for game one of the doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
