Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Hennessey Scores Four, No. 10 Saints Fall to No. 2 RIT on Senior Day

Jack Hennessey scored four goals, while Mark Mahoney tallied three and assisted on two others, and the No. 10 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team continued their stellar penalty kill, but fell to the No. 2 RIT Tigers 17-9 on senior day at Hall-Leet Stadium.

Judge Murphy scored two goals and added an assist, while Chris Jordan and Ben Murtagh both finished with two helpers. Guthrie Little finished with four ground balls and a team-best three caused turnovers, while Saints' goaltender Michael Marinello also picked up four ground balls. Padraic Condon went 9-for-16 in the faceoff circle, while Brendan Brigham went 6-for-14.

Mahoney put the Scarlet and Brown on the board first, netting his 25th goal of the season just four minutes into play. The Tigers were quick to respond scoring the next four to take a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Saints rallied early in the second on back-to-back goals from Murphy to bring the game back within one. RIT would add three more, but the Saints continued to battle with goals from Mahoney and Hennessey. Quinn Commandant scored with 1:57 to play in the second, putting the Tigers up 8-5 at halftime.

The Tigers used a strong third quarter, outscoring the Saints 6-3 to lead 14-8 heading into the final frame. Commandant, Luke Pilcher, Hennessey and Spencer Bell recorded goals in the fourth, but the Saints were unable to comeback from the deficit.

"I thought we played a solid first half, but then things got away from us in the second half," said head coach Mike Mahoney. "RIT will make you pay for mistakes, but we have great leaders on this team, who will respond quickly to get ready for Wednesday."

Pilcher led the Tigers with five goals and an assist, while five other members of the RIT squad scored twice and Mike Grace picked up six ground balls.

Marinello finished with a career-best 14 saves, while Drew Hutchinson made 11 for RIT.

The Saints, whose penalty kill ranks first in the country, shut down both of RIT's man-up opportunities. RIT held a 49-40 lead in shots, while the Saints picked up 35 ground balls to the Tigers' 27. Both team's won 15 faceoffs.

After today's game, the Saints honored the 11 members of the Class of 2022 – Josh Huiatt, William Helm, Joe Scarfi, Jack Hennessey, Stew Hutchinson, Ben Murtagh, Chris Jordan, Guthrie Little, Patrick Gillis, Jack Gorman and Mark Mahoney.

St. Lawrence will continue its run in the postseason and are slotted as the third seed in the Liberty League Tournament. The Saints will travel to second-seeded Union for a semifinal matchup on Wednesday, May 4. Game time will be announced when made available.
