Bella Hillman tallied a career-best five goals to lead the No. 15 St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team to a 16-8 win over Vassar in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon at Hall-Leet Stadium.
With the win, the Saints improved to 14-1 on the season and 8-1 in conference play, while Vassar fell to 4-10 and 2-7 respectively. With Wednesday's win over Clarkson, the Saints surpassed the 12-game win totals from 2010 and 2013 and with today's victory passed the 13-win total from 1989 and are now tied for the second place in the record book with 14 wins, matching the 2002 season.
Callie O'Neil added four goals, an assist, and seven draw control wins, while
Isabel Silvia scored three goals, assisted on three others and won eight draws.
Rachel Burke,
Jaime Allan,
Charlotte Powell and
Neve Ley all scored once for the Saints. Ley and Powell also added one assist.
Maggie Green,
Caroline Cloutier and
Annie Alfieri all caused two turnovers, while
Abigail Eberle picked up a team-best five ground balls and Silvia grabbed four.
Just 21 seconds into play, O'Neil struck first, putting the Saints on the board early. However, less than a minute later Annie Uyeki, would score on a free-position opportunity to tie the game.
The teams traded goals, before Powell tallied her 37th of the season and Hillman added her 12th to give the Saints a two goal advantage with 14:01 to play in the second. Vassar responded with two goals of their own, tying the game once more 4-4, with 8:55 to play.
The Saints scored three goals in the span of 22 seconds to take a 7-4 lead over the Brewers and after scoring five unanswered goals, the Saints led 9-4 at the break.
The Brewers broke up the Saints' five goal run, as Maddy Kretton scored the first goal of the second half to bring Vassar back within four.
Vassar held the advantage in the third quarter, outscoring the Saints 3-2, but the Saints fought back in the final frame, outscoring the Brewers 5-1 and tallying four straight down the stretch to seal the win.
"We struggled a bit early on, but were able to turn it around in the second half," said head coach
Chelsea Martin. "We were able to capitalize on some fast-break opportunities, which gave us some momentum and overall the team continues to show a lot of heart on the field."
Kretten, Uyeki, and Ashley Roberts all tallied two goals each for the Brewers.
Raelynn Bovenzi finished with two saves for the win in goal for the Scarlet and Brown, while Lauren Johns stopped 15 for Vassar.
St. Lawrence outshot Vassar 42-18, including 31-10 in shots on goal. The Saints also picked up 21 ground balls to Vassar's 14 and dominated on the draws, going 21-7.
The Saints will travel to Nazareth for a non-conference game on Tuesday, April 26 at 6 p.m.
