The No. 13 St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team defeated Nazareth 16-13 in non-conference action on Tuesday night in Rochester N.Y. With the win, the Saints matched the 15-1 record that was achieved by the 1990 NCAA Runner Up team, and the best record in program history.
Charlotte Powell lead the Scarlet and Brown with four goals, while
Morgan Arakelian and
Isabel Silvia each scored three goals and assisted on another. Silvia also picked up three ground balls, caused two turnovers and won five draw controls.
Neve Ley scored two goals and added two assists, while
Rachel Burke,
Callie O'Neil,
Bella Hillman and
Kate Hill all scored for St. Lawrence.
Jaime Allan and
Kate Wilson each picked up three ground balls.
St. Lawrence opened the game with four straight goals from Silvia, Powell, Arakelian and Hillman, but the Golden Flyers stayed tight on the Saints heels, scoring the next three to bring the game within one to start the second quarter.
The momentum shifted back in favor of the Saints, as Ley, Hill and Arakelian helped push the Saints lead to 7-3. After two more from Nazareth and Powell's second of the game, the Scarlet and Brown held an 8-5 lead at the break.
Nazareth's Reva Mussi opened scoring in the second half and the teams traded goals, but the Golden Flyer's rallied in the third quarter, going on a 6-1 run to tie the game 12-12 with 2:23 to play in the third. Powell tallied her third goal of the game with just three seconds left to give the Saints back their edge and a one-goal advantage heading into the final frame.
The Saints outscored the Golden Flyers 3-1 in the final quarter to hold off Nazareth and seal the win.
Raelynn Bovenzi made eight saves for the Saints, while
Courtney Lynn made three in a relief effort. Emma Prosak made one save for Nazareth, while Katie Lawrence made five.
Emma States scored five goals and assisted on two others, while Maggie Vay finished with three goals and two assists. Emma Perry finished with two ground balls, three caused turnovers and five draws.
The Scarlet and Brown held a 37-36 edge in shots, while Nazareth edged St. Lawrence 24-22 in shots on goal. Nazareth held the advantage on draws (17-15), while the Saints picked up 17 ground balls to Nazareth's 13.
St. Lawrence improved to 15-1 on the season, while Nazareth fell to 6-9.
The Saints will return home to host RIT on senior day, Saturday, April 30 at 3:15 p.m.
