Silvia, Powell Power No. 15 Saints to Route 11 Rivalry Win

Led by four goals apiece from Isabel Silvia and Charlotte Powell, the No. 15 St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team edged Clarkson 18-16 in Liberty League action on Wednesday afternoon in Potsdam, N.Y.

With today's win, the Scarlet and Brown improved to 13-1 overall and 7-1 in conference play, while Clarkson dropped to 9-4 and 4-4, respectively.

Both Silvia and Powell also recorded four ground balls each, while Rachel Burke scored three goals and Morgan Arakelian, Callie O'Neil and Jamie Allan all scored two. O'Neil finished with two assists and won seven draws, while Powell caused two turnovers and Maggie Green grabbed a team-best five ground balls.

In a close battle from the start, Madelynn Barnum scored the first of the game for the Golden Knights, and despite a goal from Silvia, Clarkson scored the next two for a 3-1 lead with 10:24 to play in the first. The two team's traded goals, and then St. Lawrence scored three unanswered goals to take their first lead of the game and end the first quarter with a 5-4 lead.

Powell netted an unassisted tally to make it 6-4 in favor of the Saints, but Hailey Millington scored back-to-back goals to tie the game once more, 6-6. Rachel Burke scored on a free-position opportunity with two seconds to play in the second to give the Scarlet and Brown a 7-6 lead at the break.

After halftime Julia Lavarnway knotted the game 7-7, scoring the first goal of the second half. The Saints responded just about two minutes later to go up 8-7 on a shot from Burke and with another free-position goal from Callie O'Neil, the Saints we're up by two.

With neither team leading by more than two prior, Silvia, Ley and Powell scored, as the Saints tallied five straight to hold a 12-7 advantage. The Golden Knights battled back and at the end of three quarters, St. Lawrence led 13-10.

With both teams trading pairs of goals throughout the fourth quarter, the Golden Knights managed to outscore the Saints 6-5 in the fourth, but a strong third quarter allowed the Saints to hold on to their lead for the 18-16 win.

Mia Petrone and Barnum both scored four goals for the Golden Knights, while Barnum also caused four caused turnovers, won four draws and Grace Hagberg won eight draw controls.

Raelynn Bovenzi finished with 13 saves between the pipes for St. Lawrence, while Sydney Christiansen made 14 for Clarkson.

St. Lawrence outshot Clarkson 39-33, including a 32-29 edge in shots on goal. The Golden Knights held an 18-16 edge in draw controls and the Saints picked up 27 ground balls to Clarkson's 17.

The Saints will be back in action this Saturday, as they host Vassar on April 23 at 12 p.m.
