Sofia Berryhill relieved 11 and two third innings as the St. Lawrence softball team dropped the twin bill to Skidmore on Saturday afternoon in Canton, N.Y.
St. Lawrence 1, Skidmore 6
In the first game the Thoroughbreds scored two first inning runs. In the second inning they loaded the bases with no outs. Pitcher
Jacee Casebolt struck out one, and the next batter hit a hard grounder to shortstop, and
Vivian Johnson fired the ball to catcher
Margo Hopper to get the lead runner. The next batter grounded out to Casebolt and the Saints escaped that inning unscathed, though Skidmore added a third run in the third.
In the bottom of the fifth the Saints got one back.
Sofia Adams hit a lead-off single up the third base line.
Meredith Rose pinch ran for Adams, and Rose moved to second on a
Tori Rotundo single. An errant throw advanced Rose to third, and while the infielders thought the play was over Rotundo burst towards second. She got in safely and in the confusion Rose crossed the plate to make it a 3-1 game.
Skidmore responded with three runs in the top of the six, and the 6-1 score line would hold. Casebolt ended giving up a pair of earned runs in two and a third innings pitched, and struck out one.
Sofia Berryhill let up three earned runs in four and a third, while striking out two. Rotundo finished with three hits.
Hannah Davis was the winning pitched and struck out nine.
St. Lawrence 3, Skidmore 4
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Thoroughbreds again scored quickly. Casebolt let up three runs, and Berryhill was called to the circle to relieve. The next batter grounded into a six-four-three double play, and the following fouled out to
Emily Harvey at third base to get out of the inning.
The Saints scored once in the bottom of the first, sparked by a
Stella VanGee triple to right. Hopper was next up and whacked the ball past the shortstop to bring home VanGee.
The 3-1 score held until the top of the fifth when a lead-off Skidmore double to deep center put a runner in scoring position, and another double to center would bring the runner home.
In the bottom of the fifth Rotundo reached on an error.
Stella VanGee also reached on an error that moved Rotundo to third. With runners on the corners VanGee and Rotundo executed a perfect double steal to make it 4-2.
The Thoroughbreds looked certain to cushion their lead in the top of the six, loading the bases with no one out. Meghan Robertson hit a rocket to short, and Johnson leaped up to snag the ball and caught the runners wrong footed. She fired the ball to
Sofia Camillieri at first, who then threw it to VanGee at second to come up with the triple-play.
In the bottom of the seventh Johnson hit a single up the middle, stole second, and advanced on a ground out. Hopper hit a single to center to bring home Johnson and make it a 3-4 game with the winning run at the plate.
Lauryn Best made great contact on the ball, but the shortstop came down with the liner to end the game.
Berryhill allowed just one earned run in the second game and struck out two.
Prior to the game the Saints honored the three seniors,
Sofia Adams,
Lauryn Best, and
Emily Desjardins.

Head Coach Rosie Phillips
"We lost on a combination of mental and physical errors and our lack of adjustments in the box. We have to attack early in the count and we struggled to string together timely hits and get a rally going."
