Turtledove's Singles Win Clinches 5-4 Match Over Union

The Saints won all three doubles matches to start the day but had to wait for the penultimate match of the day for the clincher from Nathan Turtledove as the St. Lawrence University men's tennis team battled to a 5-4 win over Union on Friday night at the Newell Field House.

The Scarlet and Brown improved to 7-7 with the win and 3-3 in Liberty League action, while the Dutchmen fell to 4-9 and 2-4 in league play.

St. Lawrence got off to a hot start in the match sweeping the doubles round. Turtledove and Ben Moolman teamed up at number one to take down Ben Jacobs and Aidan O'Brien 8-2. At number two, Adam Heilbronner and Edvin Strandberg partnered up to take down Dimitris and Ioannis Binopoulos 8-6. In the final doubles match, Nico Haet and John Hill-Edgar won a hard-fought match 8-7 (7-3) over Cameron Klepper and Bailey McAtee.

Haet gave the Saints their first singles win in the number three spot in the lineup. The senior took on Aidan O'Brien and won 6-2, 7-5 to claim the win and get the Scarlet and Brown within one match of the win. Following three Union wins in the number two, four, and five spots, the match came down to the number one and six matches.

Turtledove and I. Binopoulos embarked on a heavyweight bout in the number one spot which ultimately swung the match to the Saints.

The junior dropped the opening game in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5) to put his back against the wall. Turtledove responded accordingly with a 7-5 win in the second set to split the match. Turtledove outlasted his opponent 6-4 in the final set to give himself and the Scarlet and Brown the win.

St. Lawrence will not have much time to celebrate as the Saints will welcome the Vassar College Brewers into the Newell Field House tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m.
