Seventh-ranked William Smith scored eight goals in the second half to defeat the No. 25 St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team 13-5 in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon at Hall-Leet Stadium.
Callie O'Neil and
Rachel Burke scored two goals each, while
Charlotte Powell scored the fifth for the Scarlet and Brown.
Morgan Arakelian tallied one assist, while
Isabel Silvia recorded four caused turnovers, four draw control wins and two ground balls.
Jacqui Cloutier also won four draws and picked up two ground balls.
A day after both teams posted 15 or more goals in their respective wins, the first quarter was dominated by turnovers, as the two ranked squads combined for 14 turnovers and just two goals. William Smith's Maddie Montgomery opened the scoring at the 12:56 mark with an unassisted tally, before
Callie O'Neil continued her great play with a game-tying goal at 11:04.
After the first quarter, the first goal of the second came just 11 seconds in from the Heron's Katherine Murray. Murray was followed by teammates Anna Murphy and Payton McMahon, who all scored to bring the game to 4-1.
Burke ended the three-goal run scoring two goals of her own, first at the six minute and two second mark off a feed from Arakelian and then an unassisted tally with 57 seconds left in the half. Unfortunately, William Smith was able to get one back before the half as Kaitlin Pellechia scored with 13 seconds remaining to make it a 5-3 game after 30 minutes.
Powell brought the Scarlet and Brown back to within one with an unassisted goal at the eight minute and nine second mark of the third quarter, but another 3-0 run from the Herons brought the score to 8-4 going into the fourth quarter.
The Saints struck first in the fourth and final frame as O'Neil scored a minute into the quarter. That was as close as St. Lawrence would get the rest of the way as William Smith shut out the Saints in the remaining 14 minutes and scored five goals to seal the win.
William Smith was led by Montgomery with four goals and three assists, while Murphy scored three goals and added one assist. Molly Davis picked up five ground balls, caused three turnovers and won five draws, while Montgomery also won five draw controls.
Junior goaltender
Raelynn Bovenzi made a career-best 14 stops, while Maura Smeader finished with eight for the Herons.
William Smith posted a 27-13 advantage in shots on goal and picked up 24 ground balls to the Saints' 14.
With the loss, the Saints moved to 7-1 on the season and 2-1 in conference action, while the Herons improved to 6-1 and 2-0, respectively.Â
St. Lawrence will hit the road to take on Bard on Saturday, April 2 at 3 p.m.
