Rachel Burke scored a hat trick and
Isabel Silvia tallied a goal and an assist as the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team used a 9-0 run in the first half to help defeat Plattsburgh State 18-7 on Tuesday night at the Field House Soccer/Lacrosse Complex in Plattsburgh, N.Y.
The Scarlet and Brown improved to 4-0 with the win, while the Cardinals fell to 1-2.
Along with Burke's hat trick,
Callie O'Neil,
Jacqui Cloutier, and Jamie Allen all tallied two goals in the winning effort. In total, 13 different Saints tallied at least a goal in the game.
Maggie Green led the way scooping up three ground balls, while Silvia and
Annie Alfieri each had a team-high three draw controls.
The Cardinals had the momentum on their side to begin the game as the team took an early 3-2 lead. Lindsay Guzzetta and Caitlin Nash each scored in the opening three minutes of the first quarter to go up 2-0, but the Scarlet and Brown scored two of the next three as Allen and Cloutier each scored free position goals.
The Saints came out of the first quarter intermission with a vengeance scoring eight consecutive goals in the second quarter to balloon the lead to 10-3. The offensive onslaught was a very balanced one as seven different players tallied goals. Burke scored two goals in the barrage, while Silvia and Powell each had a goal and an assist.
Plattsburgh's Nash scored on a man-up opportunity to break up the nine-goal run, but St. Lawrence got goals from Burke and
Bella Hillman in the last 59 seconds of the quarter to make it a 12-4 game at the half.
The third quarter was much of the same as
Malia MacDonald, O'Neil,
Emma Polumbo, and
Kate Hill all scored as part of a 4-0 start to the period. The goal from Hill was the first of her Saints career. The Cardinals got one back from Guzzetta to make it 16-5.
The Saints got two more tallies in the fourth from
Liz Evans and
Lillian York to put the game on ice for the Scarlet and Brown. York joined her fellow first-year Hill in scoring her first goal in Scarlet and Brown with the tally.
St. Lawrence led 32-18 in shots, including a 23-12 edge in shots on goal. The Saints also led 20-14 in ground balls, but Plattsburgh led in draw controls 16-13.
Raelynn Bovenzi started the game for the Saints stopping 2 shots in 30 minutes of action.
Courtney Lynn came into the game in the third quarter stopping one shot, while
Paige Glasgow made two saves patrolling the crease in the fourth quarter. Plattsburgh's Johanna Malone faced 18 shots in net for the Cardinals and made five saves. Allexa Cassidy came on in relief facing five shots, all of which found the back of the net.
The Scarlet and Brown will be back in action this Friday, March 18 as the Saints will travel to Brockport, N.Y to take on SUNY Brockport at 3:00 p.m.
