Senior designated hitter
Andrew Circelli came out swinging in game two for three home runs and eight runs batted in and the Saints offense combined for 30 runs in two games, as the St. Lawrence University baseball team split a doubleheader with Muhlenberg College on Monday afternoon in Davenport, Fla.
St. Lawrence improved to 3-1, while Muhlenberg fell to 7-2.
The 21 runs scored in game two of the doubleheader was a first for the Saints program in the last 13 years. The last time the Scarlet and Brown scored 21 runs in a game was in the 2009 season when the Saints defeated Hamilton College 21-9.
Circelli also had a sacrifice fly RBI in game one to bring his total to nine on the day. Along with Circelli's offense,
Michael Goretti tallied six RBI on the day, while
Chris Watson and
Nicholas Butler each drove in three runs of their own.
First-year pitcher
Dylan Barber earned his first career in game two of the twin bill pitching four innings and giving up six hits and two earned runs.
Joe Perras earned his first career save in game two pitching three innings, while striking out six batters.
"We had an up-and-down day that ended on a good note," said head coach
Kenny Collins "Our lineup is getting locked in at the plate and we had some gutsy pitching performances. It was a solid team win in game two, but we can't be satisfied with splitting doubleheaders."
Game 1: St. Lawrence 9, Muhlenberg 13
The Saints were on the board first in game one of the day scoring two runs in the first. Goretti drove in a run on a ground out to shortstop, while Circelli drove in Butler on a sacrifice fly to right field.
Muhlenberg was quick to answer tallying five runs in the top half of the second inning to take a 5-2 lead. The Saints offense was a slow drip as they scored a run in the second and third inning to get within one.
The Mules offense once again hung five runs on the board in the fourth inning to bring it to 10-4. Muhlenberg extended their lead to seven after a run in the seventh to make it a 13-6 game.
The Scarlet and Brown attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh scoring three runs. The Saints called upon first-year
Timothy Connor to pinch hit with runners on first and second with no outs. The first-year reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases.
Cristian Forgione and
Brian Comerford would each walk in a run before Butler hit into an infield fly. With one out left in the game,
Jackson Brinker singled to right field to score Connor and bring the Saints within four. However, a strikeout in the next at-bat finished off the attempted rally.
Game 2: St. Lawrence 21, Muhlenberg 6
The Scarlet and Brown struck in the first yet again in game two taking an early 3-0 lead. With two outs in the opening half-inning, Goretti doubled to left center to score
Chris Watson, who had doubled in his at-bat. The very next at-bat, Circelli mashed a two-run home run to center field to extend it to a three-run lead.
C. Watson and Goretti were making plays once again in the third as Watson walked with the bases loaded to bring a runner home. Goretti, with two outs, smoked a single to center field to score two more runners and make it 6-0.
The Mules got two runs back in the second, but C. Watson got them right back in the next half-inning as a bases loaded single to center scored Comerford and
Drew Courtwright.
The Saints offense exploded in the top of the sixth inning supplying ten runs as they batted around the order. Circelli hit his second two-run homer of the game in the second at-bat of the inning after a Goretti double. Three batters later,
Jake Delaney would come around to score after singling to left and stealing second.
With one out gone, Comerford singled to center to load the bases and force a pitching change for the Mules. The reliever and catcher were not on the same page however as Forgione scored on a passed ball moments later. Muhlenberg's Martorano proceeded to walk the next three batters, allowing two runners a free route home and kept the bases full. Next to the dish was Circelli, who hit his second homer of the inning with a moonshot grand slam to centerfield to balloon the score to 19-4 in favor of the Saints. Â
In the top of the seventh, Butler hit a two-run home run of his own to increase that lead to 21-4. The Mules got two more runs in the seventh, but could not sustain enough offense to make a dent in the substantial lead.
Barber earned his first career in game two of the twin bill pitching four innings and giving up six hits and two earned runs. Perras earned his first career save in game two pitching three innings, while striking out six batters.
