Saints Baseball Sweeps Thomas College 5-4, 6-1

Senior's Drew Courtwright and Cristian Forgione each had multi-RBI outings in games one and two respectively as the St. Lawrence University swept Thomas College 5-4, 6-1 on Tuesday afternoon in Davenport, Fla.

St. Lawrence improved to 5-1, while Thomas fell to 3-13.

In game one, D. Courtwright drove in two runs in the top of the seventh that gave the Saints all the offense they would end up needing to secure the game. In game two, Forgione drove in runs in the second, third, and fifth innings to pace the offense.

Michael Hutchins dominated in game one pitching six and one-third innings giving up two earned runs and striking out six batters. Nicholas Butler came out of his right field spot in the bottom of the seventh to close out the game striking out two and earning the save. Christian Mingione started game two and earned the win pitching five innings of two hit ball, striking out two and walking two.

Game 1: St. Lawrence 5, Thomas 4

Compared to yesterday's fireworks, the beginning of the day today was very slow. Despite that, the Saints jumped onto the scoresheet in the top of the first scoring two runs. Chris Watson singled in the number two spot lineup, and was sent home immediately by Butler, who drilled a triple. The next at-bat, Michael Goretti hit a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Butler.

The next run in the game didn't come until the top of the fourth where Brian Comerford singled home Forgione, who walked to start the half-inning.

The game remained 3-0 until the seventh, where the Scarlet and Brown would add to their three-run lead. Following an Andrew Circelli double then a Jake Delaney single and stolen second base, D. Courtwright delivered a two RBI single to extend the lead to 5-0.

Thomas nearly came back in their last at-bats getting two runs on a Jarrad Wille pinch hit two RBI double. The double knocked Hutchins out of the game, leaving it up to Butler out of the outfield. Butler gave up a single which drove  in a run, then saw a ground ball error drive in Thomas' fourth run to make it 5-4. The senior dialed in striking out the next two batters to close out the game and earn the save.

Game 2: St. Lawrence 6, Thomas 1

The Saints once again got across home plate first, this time in the bottom of the second. With one out in the half-inning, Forgione singled to the shortstop and advanced to second on an error. Circelli, who was at second, scored on the error. Later in the inning, Brett Federico singled home Caleb Clark, who came in for Forgione to take the 2-0 lead.

The two teams traded runs in the next two innings to make the score 4-1 Saints.

The last runs of the back end of the twin bill came in the bottom of the fifth, where the Scarlet and Brown put up two more runs for good measure. Goretti opened the half-inning with a double which was followed by Circelli, who hit a double of his own to drive in Goretti. Delaney then sacrificed Circelli over to third and Clark hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score the senior.
