Sofia Berryhill pitched six and a third innings and gave up just one hit and zero earned runs, as the St. Lawrence softball team split their games with Macalester and Wheaton in Clermont, Fla on Sunday afternoon.
Stella VanGee and
Margo Hopper each went four for seven, and Hopper had the RBI in each game.
St. Lawrence 1, Macalester 0
Jacee Casebolt and
Sofia Berryhill each gave up just one hit and kept the Scots scoreless for the Saints second win of the season.
The lone run came in the bottom of the first inning.
Vivian Johnson walked to get on base.
Lauryn Best advanced her on a single to center, and the two base runners advanced on a passed ball.
Margo Hopper hit a single past the shortstop to bring Johnson home.
Casebolt struck out five in her three innings in the circle. Berryhill pitched the final four innings and struck out two.
Wheaton 5, St. Lawrence 1
After two scoreless innings the Lyons first baseman Tristan Keller hit a triple to score three runs. She crossed the bag when Bryanna Agan hit a sacrifice fly to right field. They made it four in the fourth when Sarah Pritchard hit a double to score Juliette Zito.
The Saints had the bases loaded and one out in the top of the sixth, but a heads up fielder's choice got the runner going home, and
Zola Braswell popped out to get Wheaton out of danger.
In the top of the seventh,
Stella VanGee hit a double, and Johnson grounded out to advance her to third.
Margo Hopper, who was behind the plate both games, hitting a triple to right center to get VanGee across the plate. Wheaton would get the final two outs and secured their first win of the season, 5-1.
"We had a strong showing from our entire pitching staff today and had a few key defensive plays, but we couldn't execute in the timely way that we needed on offense and left too many stranded," said head coach
Rosie Phillips. "We can't wait until we're late in the game to gain momentum, and that ended up hurting us in the second game."
The Saints face Franklin & Marshall and Framingham on Monday for another double header in Florida, with the Diplomats first at 3 p.m.
