Game Recap: Baseball |

Saints Baseball Sweeps Colby-Sawyer To Open Their Season

The Scarlet and Brown's offense was a balanced one as eight batters registered an RBI in the St. Lawrence University baseball team's season opening sweep of Colby-Sawyer in Davenport, Fla. on Sunday afternoon.

Seniors Michael Goretti, Nicholas Butler, and Andrew Circelli, along with junior Jimmy Liberatore all registered two hits in the doubleheader. Liberatore, who played in game two, also scored two runs and hit a solo home run in the second inning.

Andrew Matthews and Jack Sylvia each earned their first wins of the campaign in the doubleheader. Matthews, who started game one, pitched six and two-thirds innings striking out seven batters and giving up one earned run. Sylvia, who started game two, faced 13 batters in four innings of work yielding no hits and one walk with five strikeouts.

"As we expected, there was some rust to shake off in our first time outside this season," said head coach Kenny Collins "Our starting pitching carried us today and we'll be up for a good test against Muhlenberg tomorrow. The bats came alive by the end of game two, and we need to carry that into tomorrow.
Game 1: St. Lawrence 2, Colby-Sawyer 1

The Saints tallied just four hits in the opening game of their season, but three of them resulted in two runs for St. Lawrence in the bottom of the first inning.

After an opening inning ground out, Butler walked in his first at-bat of the year. The senior proceeded to steal second, then was moved to third on a balk by the Chargers' starter. A Circelli single drove home his teammate and set the Scarlet and Brown up with runners at first and third with just one out. Jake Delaney came to the dish and drove home Goretti to give the Saints their second run.

In the top of the third, Colby-Sawyer cut the Scarlet and Brown's lead in half with a solo home run from the Charger's centerfielder.

Despite giving up the home run, Matthews was dominant on the hill striking out seven batters and holding the Chargers off the scoreboard in his six and two-thirds innings.

With one out to go in the top of the seventh, The Saints brought in Michael Hutchins for a save opportunity. Hutchins walked his first and second batter but struck out the next looking to close out the game and earn the save.
Game 2: St. Lawrence 8, Colby-Sawyer 3

The bats came alive for the Saints in game two of the doubleheader tallying nine hits and eight runs. St. Lawrence was 5-1 last season when scoring eight or more runs and found similar success today.

The scoring started off with a bang as Liberatore homered to left field with two outs in the top of the second inning. The game remained scoreless after that until the junior hit the dish again in the fifth.

Liberatore jumpstarted the offense again with a single to left. Then Cristian Forgione was up next and was able to reach base on an error and advanced to second, with Liberatore heading to third on the play. Brett Federico then doubled to left field to score both runners and give St. Lawrence the 3-1 lead.

In the sixth, Circelli earned a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a balk to put him in scoring position. Chris Watson doubled to left field to score Circelli and bring the score to 4-0.

The game blew wide open in the seventh inning as the Saints doubled their lead to 8-0. Federico's smart base-running earned him a run as he scored on a wild-pitch. Goretti, Stephen Colangelo, and Drew Courtwright each proceeded to drive in runs to extend the lead.

The Chargers earned three of their own in the bottom of the inning, but could not muster up enough offense for a comeback.

Sylvia dominated on the bump in four innings of action striking out five Chargers giving up no hits and walking one in the win. Michael Watson, Christian Mingione, and Brenden O'Neil each pitched an inning in the Sylvia win.
The Scarlet and Brown are back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader against Muhlenberg College in Davenport, Fla. Game one will start at 1:30 p.m., while game two is slated for 4:00 p.m.
