Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Skating Saints Fall 4-3 In Double Overtime To Quinnipiac

Aleksi Peltonen, Jordan Steinmetz, and Josh Boyer all scored in regulation to give the Saints a 3-1 lead, but a late rally from Quinnipiac along with a double game-winner sent the St. Lawrence men's hockey team to a 4-3 loss to the Bobcats in game two of the ECAC Quarterfinals at the People's United Center on Saturday night.

St. Lawrence's season comes to an end with an 11-19-7 record, while Quinnipiac, who improved to 30-5-3, advanced to the Semifinal round of the ECAC playoffs in Lake Placid.

The Skating Saints jumped on the Bobcats early in game two with a goal at the 14:09 mark of the first period. Senior captain David Jankowski started the scoring play passing the puck up to Luc Salem, who wired a shot onto Yaniv Perets. The shot was knocked down and Peltonen was able to shovel it home on the doorstep to take the 1-0 lead.

The game remained a 1-0 contest until almost 15 minutes into the second period. Griffin Mendel scored his third goal of the series from the point to tie the game at one.

After a relatively calm first 40 minutes, the two teams exploded for four goals in the third.

The Skating Saints raced to a 3-1 lead early in the third scoring twice in the first four minutes.

Steinmetz scored less than two minutes in to the period to break up the 1-1 tie. First-years Chris Pappas and Philippe Chapleau got their hands on a puck in the Saints' defensive zone in a scramble, but it was Steinmetz, who picked up a loose puck and carried it all the way to the Bobcats' end. The junior burnt Perets with a rocket of a shot for his second goal of the weekend to take the 2-1 lead.

Moments later, Chapleau earned his second assist of the game when he took a Tim Makowski pass from behind the Scarlet and Brown goal and ripped a breakaway pass to Boyer.  The junior looked Perets off the blocker side and shot it over his glove to double the Saints' lead.

Quinnipiac would cut that lead in half at the 7:42 mark when Brandon Less put a power play tally past Emil Zetterquist. The Bobcats kept up the pressure and earned an equalizer in the second half of the third period. Skyler Brind'Amour tipped home a shot to make it a 3-3 game and help send the contest to overtime.

The first overtime was a hotly contested one that saw St. Lawrence lead Quinnipiac in shots 6-4. Both teams were given a power play chance in the extra period, but neither team was able to capitalize as the it went to a second overtime.

St. Lawrence held an even greater 8-3 shot advantage in the second overtime, but it was the Bobcats that got a fortuitous bounce to give them a game-winner. At the nine minute and nine second mark, Mendel rifled a shot from the blueline that ricocheted off the lively Quinnipiac end boards and landed in dangerous territory. Desi Burgart was at the right place at the right time to tap home the series-clincher.

Zetterquist finished with 40 saves in the game, while Perets stopped 31.

The Saints came up empty on the power play going 0-for-3, while the Bobcats went 1-for-4.

St. Lawrence's season comes to an end with an 11-19-7 record overall and a 7-10-5 record in regular season conference action.
