Josh Huiatt scored five goals, including two on the man-up, and
William Helm made 15 saves to lead the No. 15 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team to a 16-7 win over Nazareth on Friday afternoon in Rochester, N.Y.
Huiatt also grabbed three ground balls, while
Judge Murphy tallied three goals and four assists and
Jack Hennessey also scored three.
Chris Jordan scored once and assisted on two others, while
Ben Murtagh,
Zadoc White,
Ben Kniskern and
Hayes Huwiler also scored. Huwiler also grabbed four ground balls, while 10 members of the Saints squad caused one turnover.
The Golden Flyers' Greg Bilek struck first with an unassisted tally, but the Scarlet and Brown went on a nine-goal run to take a 9-1 lead with 6:37 to play in the second.
Nazareth netted two more goals, but White closed the half win an unassisted goal for the 10-3 advantage.
The Saints outscored the Golden Flyers 4-0 in the third frame to extend their lead to 14-3.
Murphy opened scoring in the fourth quarter with his ninth of the season and despite four goals in the fourth from Nazareth, the Saints maintained their advantage for their third win of the season.
"It was a good solid win," said head coach
Mike Mahoney "We started a bit slow, but our goalie made some phenomenal saves early to allow us to settle in. It was certainly a nice way to kick off the trip and we are excited to head south to continue to make strides as a team."
Brett Randall lead the Golden Flyers with three goals, while Bilek scored twice.
Helm finished with 15 saves between the pipes, while Carson Pickeral made 13 for Nazareth.
The Saints held a 30-23 advantage in shots on goal, and controlled the ground ball game 40-27. St. Lawrence also converted on 2-of-4 man-up opportunities.
St. Lawrence improved to 3-1 on the season, while Nazareth fell to 1-4.
Next up, the Saints head to Tampa, Fla. to take on Western New England on Tuesday, March 15 at 6:30 p.m.
