Kristina Bahl scored her third goal of the season to lift the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 2-1 win over No. 7/8 Quinnipiac University in an ECAC Hockey matchup on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena in Canton, New York.
Â
Rachel Bjorgan put the Saints up 1-0 five minutes into the game. She picked off a pass from the Bobcats in the defensive zone and carried it down center ice, flying by two Quinnipiac defenders, and whipped a shot past Bobcat goaltender Corinne Schroeder for her fifth goal of the season and second point of the weekend.
Â
But Kate Reilly answered back with just two minutes and 15 seconds left in the period, sending a wrister through traffic in front of the St. Lawrence net to tie the game at 1-1.
Â
After the first 20 minutes of play, the Scarlet and Brown were outshot 8-4 by the Navy and Gold.
Â
Bahl put the Saints back on top with a goal 11 minutes into the second.
Nara Elia passed the puck through center ice and into the zone to
Jessica Poirier, who fired off a shot on net, but Schroeder made the stop. Bahl picked up the puck off the rebound and tipped a backhander by a confused Schroeder, who lost the puck in the scramble.
Â
This time it was St. Lawrence who held the edge on shots with nine, compared to Quinnipiac's six, after the second period.
Â
The Saints came out flying to start the third, and had control of the puck for much of the period, but Schroeder kept the game close. It was not until late in the period once she headed to the Bobcats bench that the momentum shifted.
Â
Quinnipiac poured on the pressure with the extra skater, but Morgan kept the puck out of the net, locking in the 2-1 victory for St. Lawrence.
Â
By the end of the third, the Saints had outshot the Bobcats 10-8.
Â
"That was our best effort of the year," said head coach
Chris Wells '92. "We started with pace and we finished with pace. We had a real good third period where we had a few very good chances to get it to 3-1. Quinnipiac is so sound up and down the lineup, we knew they would have a few shifts where we would get hemmed in."
Â
Â
Morgan and Schroeder both finished the game with 21 saves.
Â
"Lucy stopped some pucks and a couple of shots just went wide to be able to keep the game at 2-1," Wells continued. "Our games with them are always like this. It can go either way each night and tonight we were fortunate to be on the right side of it!"
Â
St. Lawrence went 20-for-46 at the face-off circle, 1-1 on the penalty kill, and 0-6 on the power-play.
Â
With the win, the Saints improved to 13-10-5 overall and 9-5-2 in conference play with the victory, while the Bobcats fell to 19-6-3 and 11-5-0.
