Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Saints Edge Out Tigers

Shannon Rhone was a perfect eight-for-eight from the free throw line, including four in the final minute, to secure St. Lawrence women's basketball team's 69-61 win over RIT on Saturday afternoon in Rochester, N.Y.

Katie Frederick had 17 points and 20 rebounds to pace the Saints, and Ava McCann hit four shots from deep on her way to 16 points. McCann has hit at least four 3-pointers in seven games this season.

The Saints came out red hot and rolling, scoring 16 of the first 17 points. The Tigers finally got their first field goal after over six minutes of play. RIT put together a little bit of a run to prevent the scoreline from getting out of hand early, and after the first quarter trailed the Saints just 21-12.

Midway through the second quarter, the Tigers were able to close the gap to six, but back to back layups by Frederick were followed by an Olivia Barringer lay in to push the lead up to 12 at 29-17. RIT responded with five straight points, and after exchanging some buckets the score at half was 33-24.

The Tigers outscored the Saints by five in the third quarter, and with 7:24 left to play in the fourth quarter hit a pair of free throws to give RIT their first lead of the game at 50-49. A few minutes later, the Saints reclaimed the lead off of a McCann 3-pointer, and the Saints had control for the rest of the afternoon.

"A great team win overcoming some adversity with injuries again," said head coach Dan Roiger. "Shannon Rhone stepped up big this weekend and specifically today, cashing in and securing the game at the line. Olivia Middleton played some excellent defense and Katie Frederick played well on both ends of the floor. Some of the weaknesses of our team we are starting to fix, and today our low turnovers and excellent free throw shooting helped us win the game."

Rhone had 11 points, including all eight free throws she attempted. Frederick was also perfect from the line, sinking nine. The Saints, who average less than 60-percent from the line, shot 84-percent.

Emma Waite and Kaleesha Joseph each had 19 points for RIT, and Joseph secured 10 boards.

The Saints came down with 50 rebounds, nine more than the Tigers.
