Lucy Morgan recorded her fifth shutout of the season and the ninth of her career, and
Suyeon Eom scored her first collegiate goal, as the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team topped Princeton 3-0 in an ECAC Hockey matchup on Friday night at Appleton Arena in Canton, New York.
Â
Jessica Porrier put the Saints on the board at the 2:25 mark.
Laura Cote picked up a loose puck behind the goal line and passed it to
Shailynn Snow, who sent it to Porrier in the right side of the defensive zone. Porrier carried the puck down the ice and fired a wrister into the net from the face-off dot to give St. Lawrence the 1-0 lead.
Â
Despite holding the lead on the scoreboard, the Tigers outshot the Saints 14-8 after the first period.
Â
Eom increased the Scarlet & Brown's lead to 2-0 early in the second period.
Rachel Bjorgan stole the puck and sent it to Eom along the boards, who carried it net front and wrapped it around Princeton goaltender Rachel McQuiggie for Eom's first collegiate goal.
Â
With a shift in momentum following Eom's goal, St. Lawrence outshot Princeton 8-7 in the second.
Â
Both the Tigers and the Saints had several chances in the third, but both Morgan and McQuiggie were equal to the task.
Â
It was not until Princeton pulled McQuiggie for the extra skater with two minutes and 35 seconds left that
Abby Hustler scored an empty netter to solidify St. Lawrence's 3-0 win.
Aly McLeod picked up the loose puck and passed it to Hustler at center ice, who scored her eighth of the season with the goal.
Â
"We were opportunistic tonight with our goals," said head coach
Chris Wells '92. "Princeton had good pressure on us for stretches and Lucy made some nice saves."
Â
Â
Morgan finished with 37 saves, while McQuiggie had 16. With the shutout, Morgan moved into a tie for sixth place on the all-time shutout record list with Sonjia Shelly '19.
Â
"Our defense and forwards did a great job getting in shooting lanes blocking shots and coming up with loose pucks," Wells continued. "Any win this time of year is tough in this league and we are happy to get it."
Â
St. Lawrence went 23-for-56 at the face-off circle, and went 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
Â
The Saints improved to 12-10-5 overall and 8-5-2 in conference play with the victory, while Princeton fell to 9-10-4 and 7-7-2.
Â
St. Lawrence will host Quinnipiac University tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. at Appleton Arena.
