Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Paul's Overtime Goal Gives Skating Saints 2-1 Win Over Yale

Max Dorrington tied the game late in the third, and Justin Paul capped off his two-point night with an overtime goal to push the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team to a 2-1 win over Yale at Ingalls Rink in New Haven, Conn.

St. Lawrence improved to 7-13-5 and 5-7-3 in the ECAC with the win, while the Bulldogs dropped to 5-13-1 and 4-8-1 in conference action

"I liked our start tonight, but we needed to get to the hard areas more in the first two periods," said Charles W. Appleton Head Men's Hockey Coach Brent Brekke "We finally did, and Dorrington got rewarded with an opportunity at the net. Yale had a strong push in the second period. The penalty kill did a great job all night, especially on the five-minute major. Zetterquist played another very solid game for us. That team plays hard and transitions well. So, that was a good road win for us tonight."

The Saints nearly got on the board midway through the first when Paul sprung Dorrington for a bid. The sophomore came down the middle of the ice with speed against three Yale defenders and fired a quick wrist shot just after crossing the blue line. The shot beat the Bulldogs' goalie Nathan Reid over his blocker, but it rang off the post to keep the game scoreless.

The Scarlet and Brown dominated the shot totals in the first period to the tune of 11-4.

The Bulldogs would eventually get on the board first at the 4:22 mark of the second period. Graham Lillibridge started the Yale breakout with a stretch-pass to Cole Donhauser, who tapped it to Reilly Connors as they entered the Saints' zone. Connors skated to the top of the circle and snapped a rolling puck over the shoulder of Emil Zetterquist to take the 1-0 lead.

With 6:23 to go in the third the Saints finally found the back of the net for the equalizer. Dorrington caused a turnover on a Yale breakout, then chased the puck to the boards. The sophomore poked it to Paul, who gathered it and fired a shot on the net. The shot was saved, but the rebound was buried by Dorrington in a scrum to make it a 1-1 game.

After skating the last six plus minutes to a draw, the game was sent to a three-on-three overtime. The Scarlet and Brown almost had a game-winner with 3:17 to go when Mason Waite came down from the blue line and into the slot, then fired a wrist shot off the inside post.

Paul started the game-winning play in the defensive zone causing a Bulldog turnover with two Yale players deep in the Saints' zone. The sophomore skated the puck out and onto a two-on-one break. Paul looked to his teammate then sniped a wrister over the glove of Nathan Reid to ice the game at 2-1 for the Saints.

Zetterquist finished the game with 20 saves in the win, while Reid stopped 29 in the loss.

Both teams failed to take advantage on their power plays despite the plentiful opportunities. St. Lawrence went 0-for-4 on man-advantages, while Yale went 0-for-3. Both teams were afforded a five-minute chance as both teams were given majors in the second period.

The Skating Saints will hop on the bus and head to Providence, R.I. to take on Brown University tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m.
