Claire Dalton picked off the puck in the Saints' zone and Emma Seitz fired from the left circle to put the Bulldogs up 1-0 at 5:31 of the first period.
Just about three minutes later and in similar fashion, Seitz turned the puck over, skated in and fired from the left circle through traffic and over the shoulder of
Lucy Morgan to give Yale a 2-0 lead at 8:27 with her second of the game.
Rebecca Vanstone looked to make it 3-0 on a breakaway opportunity, but Morgan was up to the task with the stop with just about seven and a half minutes remaining in the first.
Yale's Elle Hartje scored to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 advantage at 12:34, at first look the play seemed to be goaltender interference, the play went up for review by the officials, but stood on the ice.
Just before the end of the first, the Saints got on the board, as
Shailynn Snow carried the puck through the neutral zone and all the way through the Yale zone, slipped the puck back and it trickled past the foot of Gianna Meloni making it 3-1 at 18:40.
Hillary Sterling tallied an assist on the play.
The Saints got back within one, as
Aly McLeod played the puck up to
Melissa Jefferies at the point. Jefferies sent the puck into the zone to Hustler, her original shot was stopped, but
Nara Elia capitalized on the rebound for the goal to bring the game to 3-2 at 17:06 of the second.
After two periods of play, the Bulldogs held a 18-16 edge in shots on goal.
Elia nearly tallied her second of the game on a 3-on-2 opportunity, but Meloni stopped the backhanded shot.
The Saints pulled Morgan with 2:22 to play for the extra attacker and produced two solid opportunities, but the Scarlet and Brown were unable to find the equalizer.
"We had a lot fight in this team and it showed right to the end," said head coach
Chris Wells. "It would have been easy to pack it in after 3-0, but we did a good job getting the game back to the pace we wanted to play. We had some great efforts the last two months and we almost pulled off a big upset down here."
"As a coach one of the most satisfying things that happens is watching the team come together and play like we did the last 18 games. Once the feeling of losing the playoff series wears off, we all can take a lot from what we did this year!"
Both Morgan and Meloni finished with 21 saves.
Yale finished with a 24-23 edge in shots. The Bulldogs went 1-for-1 on the power play, while St. Lawrence finished 0-for-2
Yale improved to 24-7-1 and will advance to the next round of the ECACÂ Tournament, while the Saints closed the season 15-15-7.
