Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Saints Fall in Finals to Ithaca, 70-58

The St. Lawrence women's basketball team fell to the Bombers of Ithaca 70-58 in the championship game of the Liberty League tournament on Sunday afternoon in Ithaca, N.Y.

With the game tied at 11, the Saints closed the first quarter outscoring the Bomber 9-4 to take a 20-15 lead at the break. Neither team could make any headway in the second quarter, and St. Lawrence stayed up by five at the midway point, 33-28. The Bombers out-scored the Saints 23-16 in the third quarter to go up 49-48 with one quarter to play.

Olivia Middleton started the final quarter scoring three the old fashion way to retake the lead. For the next six minutes the teams traded baskets, with neither team able to lead by more than two. Over the next two and a half minutes, the Bombers went on a nine to nothing run, and the Saints had to start fouling to stop the clock. The Bombers hit their free throws, and won the championship 70-58.

"We competed all game, and with three minutes to go it was still neck and neck, but it just got away from us in the end," said head coach Dan Roiger. "Turnovers have been our weakness all year, and Coach Zenoviah and I have discussed that sooner or later when we got beat, it would be due to turnovers. I'm really proud of the team this season, how we handled all the adversity we faced, we had a great year."

Katie Frederick finished with a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double. Middleton also had 15 points and came down with six rebounds. Ava McCann hit three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points.

Grace Cannon finished with 26 points for the Bombers and was named tournament Most Outstanding Player.

St. Lawrence out-rebounded the Bombers 39-34. The Saints shot 42-percent from the floor, and the Bombers connected on 43-percent. The Bombers were 15-25 from the free throw line, while the Saints hit five on just six attempts.
