Saints Women's Tennis Opens Conference Play With 6-3 Win

The Saints had three players go 2-0 in their first conference matchup of the season to lead the St. Lawrence University women's tennis team over Union 6-3 on Sunday afternoon at Newell Field House.

The Scarlet and Brown improved to 2-0 on the season and are 1-0 in Liberty League play. Union is now 1-2 overall and in league play.

The match started in the doubles and was kicked off by Meredith Macey and Emily Harris in the number three spot. The two teamed up to easily defeat Gabby Gatto and Paige Tromblee 8-1. After the Saints fell in the number one spot, The duo of Caitlyn Avery and Catherine Gamble put the Scarlet and Brown up 2-1 on the day with an 8-4 win over sisters Hallie and Rayna Katzman.

In the number two singles, Gamble backed up her doubles win with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Gabby Gatto to go 2-0 on the day.

Macey and Harris were also able to back up their doubles wins with victories in the fourth and fifth spot respectively. Macey took on Paige Tromblee at number four and earned the 6-3, 6-4 win. Harris faced Kate Hirnak at number five and won 6-0, 6-2.

Elena Styliades, who fell in her doubles match, bounced back in singles to perfectly sweep Hallie Katzman 6-0, 6-0 in the sixth spot.

The Scarlet and Brown will head to the road next weekend to take on Skidmore College on Saturday, March 5th at 10:00 a.m. before heading to Orlando for their spring break matches.
