Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Skating Saints Drop 4-2 Game To Colgate In Hamilton

Ty Naaykens scored early in the contest, and Max Dorrington got the Saints within one in the final minute, but the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team fell 4-2 to Colgate on Saturday night at the Class of 1965 Arena.

The Saints fell to 8-16-6 on the year and 6-10-4 in ECAC play, while Colgate improved to 13-15-4 and 8-8-4 in league action.

The Skating Saints got off to another fast start in today's contest scoring their first goal in the opening two minutes of play. Tucker McIntosh skated the puck into the Colgate zone and put a shot on Will Friend, who was playing in his first ever game on senior night. The rebound popped back out to the sophomore, who put it right back into Friend's pads. In the ensuing scrum, Naaykens was able to shovel the puck past the senior netminder to take the early 1-0 lead. Sophomores Dorrington and McIntosh earned assists on the play.

The Scarlet and Brown nearly doubled their lead minutes later when Ashton Fry found himself with room in the slot. Cameron Buhl had the attention of three Raiders at their blueline and dished a pass to the wide-open Fry. The junior fired a wrist shot that beat Mitch Benson, who came on in relief for Friend, but hit the crossbar to keep it at 1-0.

The second period was a different story as it was Colgate, who scored one minute and two seconds into the frame. The Raiders were able to hem the Saints into the defensive zone and Griffin Lunn took advantage of the tired legs and beat Emil Zetterquist to knot the game up at 1-1.

Colgate's offense heated up after that getting goals from Josh McKechney a minute and 55 seconds later, then got their third goal of the period from Tommy Bergslund, who threaded a puck through traffic and in with eight minutes and 45 seconds left to give the Raiders the 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.

St. Lawrence and Colgate battled to a scoreless third period up until the last 30 seconds of the game. With Zetterquist on the bench in favor of an extra skater, the Skating Saints were able to get within one with 29.7 to go. Fresh off a St. Lawrence line change, Philippe Chapleau found senior captain Kaden Pickering flying through the neutral zone. Pickering put a shot on Benson that went wide, but bounced off the back wall and over the head of Benson in net. Dorrington was in the right place at the right time to bury the puck in the scrum and make it a 3-2 game.

Moments later, with the net still empty and the Saints still hunting a goal, Elliott McDermott iced the game with a long-distance empty netter to make it 4-2.

Zetterquist finished with 31 saves on 34 shots in the loss. Friend finished his day with two saves before being relieved by Benson, who stopped 25 shots in the win.

St. Lawrence went 0-for-2 on the power play, while the Raiders went 0-for-1 on their man advantage.

The Skating Saints will now head back home for their final two games of the regular season. On Friday, February 25, the Saints will host Brown at 7:00 p.m. Then on Saturday, the Scarlet and Brown will take on Yale on senior night at 7:00 p.m.
