Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Skating Saints Force 1-1 Tie With Brown; Lose Shootout

Sophomore defender Tucker McIntosh scored an extra-attacker goal in the third to tie up the contest, but the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team settled for a 1-1 tie against Brown on Friday night in Appleton Arena.

The Bears were able to win the shootout 1-0 to secure the ever-valuable extra league point that was up for grabs.

The Scarlet and Brown moved to 8-16-7 on the year and 6-10-5 in ECAC play with the tie while Brown moved to 6-17-4 and 6-11-4 in conference.

The opening frame belonged to the Bears, who had a 10-7 edge in shots after the 20 minutes of play. Brown was able to capitalize with a goal at the six minute and 54 second mark. The Bears' Jake Harris scooped up a puck along the boards to the left side of Emil Zetterquist and skated to the middle of the ice where he would put a shot on goal. The shot was saved, but the rebound fell onto the stick of Michael Maloney, who shoveled the puck into the net to take the 1-0 lead.

The Saints had a chance to tie the game when senior captain Kaden Pickering came screaming down the right-side ice with the puck. The forward toe-dragged a defender and put a heavy shot on through a screen, but was turned aside by Mathieu Caron.

The second and third period were a different story as the Skating Saints dialed up more pressure outshooting Brown 28-17 the rest of the way. The Scarlet and Brown started to get more rubber on Caron and had numerous chances to score. Assistant captain Tim Makowski, and Reilly Moran each had tremendous opportunities in the middle frame, but Caron was able to turn all 14 shots aside to keep the lead.

The game remained at 1-0 through a majority of the third period, which lead to St. Lawrence pulling Zetterquist for an extra-attacker with three minutes and two seconds remaining. The strategy worked as the Skating Saints knotted up the game moments later. Senior captain David Jankowksi collected a puck off the end boards and carried it up towards the blue line. The senior dished the puck off to McIntosh, who threaded a perfect shot through numerous Brown defenders, a Justin Paul screen, and past Caron to make it 1-1.

The game would go to a three-on-three overtime for an extra league point. St. Lawrence controlled play for most of the five-minute period, but with both teams unable to score, the game went down as a draw with just a shootout left to decide the point in dispute.

Pickering, who has two shootout game-winners on the year, went first for the Saints but was stopped on his bid. Jordan Tonelli followed and beat Zetterquist through the five-hole to take the lead. Paul missed his attempt opening the door for Samuli Niinisaari to win the shootout, but Zetterquist held firm in net. Jankowski came down looking to tie the game in the third round and was stopped which gave Brown the 1-0 shootout win.

Zetterquist stopped 26 shots in the tie, while Caron stopped 34 along with three in the shootout.

Both teams came up empty going 0-for-3 on their man advantages.

The Skating Saints will be back at home tomorrow night and will be celebrating the Class of 2022 prior to the 7:00 p.m. contest against Yale. The game will be a crucial one with the Scarlet and Brown within reach of a top-eight playoff spot.
