Five Saints finished in double figures, as the St. Lawrence men's basketball team beat Union 81-62 on Saturday afternoon in Burkman Gymnasium. The Saints clinched a first round playoff game with the win, and will host Skidmore on February 22.
The Saints jumped out to an 18-2 lead, with senior
Luke Hicks scoring nine points in the opening six minutes. The scarlet and brown would lead by as many as 17-points in the opening half, and led at the break 39-26.
The Dutchmen were never able to get the score to single digits, and
Will Engelhardt had eight points in under two minutes to extend the lead to 63-41 with ten minutes left to play. The score never got closer than 16, and the Saints held on to win 81-62.
"We have played two close games with Skidmore and Tuesday night will be a real challenge," said head coach
Chris Downs. "We will work hard to prepare and see what happens."
Trent Adamson had a 20 point, 11 rebound double-double, and Engelhardt finished with an 18 points, 10 rebound double-double of his own. Engelhardt hit four shots from deep, and the Saints finished with 10 3-pointers. Hicks finished with a dozen, including a trio of 3-pointers, and
Trey Syroka and
Gavin Macaulay each had 11.
The Saints shot over 51-percent from the floor and hit 50-percent of their 3-pointers. They held union to 38.7-percent from the floor and 28.6-percent from deep.
Brian Noone led all scorers with 29 for Union, and Mike Manley had 18.
Prior to today's game, the Saints honored the lone member of the Class of 2022 –
Luke Hicks.
