Reilly Moran scored in the first period, and senior captain
David Jankowski put on the finishing touch in overtime to give the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team a 2-1 win over No. 18 Cornell at Lynah Rink on Friday night.
The Scarlet and Brown improved to 8-15-6 on the season and 6-9-4 in ECAC play. The Big Red fell to 14-7-4 on the year and 9-5-4 in league play. The loss was the first in overtime for Cornell, who were 4-0-4 previously.
The win was the first for St. Lawrence over Cornell since the 2015-16 season, and it was the first win for the Saints at Lynah Rink since the 2014-15 season.
"That was a hard fought battle against a strong team, I'm so proud of our guys," said Charles W. Appleton Head Men's Hockey Coach
Brent Brekke "We did a better job of managing the puck and getting up the ice with speed. That's a special win for our seniors and they played a huge part in earning that win. Such a great night for those seniors!"
Moran got the scoring started just one minute and 54 seconds into the first period. After an initial scrum in front of Ian Shane caused by heavy Saints' pressure, the puck came out to
Luke Erickson at the blueline. Erickson worked the puck over to
Luc Salem, who put a shot on net. The shot was turned aside, but the rebound found the stick of Moran in front. The sophomore shoveled the puck past Shane to give the Saints the 1-0 lead.
St. Lawrence doubled up the Big Red in shots 14-7 in a first period dominated by the Saints.
The Scarlet and Brown continued to get shots to the frame outshooting Cornell 9-7 in the second, but the Big Red would tie up the game in the middle period. Captain Kyle Betts took a pass from Justin Ertel and charged in on
Emil Zetterquist with a defender on his back pocket. The senior made a good move to beat Zetterquist and knot the game at 1-1.
Cornell seemed to turn the momentum in the third stopping the Saints from generating much offense. Zetterquist was solid in net behind the defense turning away numerous good looks for the Big Red. His biggest save however came in the overtime period when a Cornell forward put a perfectly deflected puck on net. The senior netminder hugged his post and gobbled up the rebound to keep the game tied in the extra period.
Just 17 seconds later, Jankowski would win the game for the Saints. Fellow captain
Kaden Pickering started the play putting pressure on a Big Red defender at the St. Lawrence blueline causing a turnover. First-year
Mason Waite picked up the puck and skated through the neutral zone and into enemy territory. Waite dropped a pass to Jankowski, who in shades of last year's ECAC title game calmly held the puck waiting for a free lane. The senior captain fired a wrist shot that trickled through Shane and in to give the Skating Saints the 2-1 win.
Zetterquist stopped 18 of the 19 shots he faced in the big-time win. Shane stopped 28 in the loss.
St. Lawrence had four chances on the power play, but came up empty at 0-for-4. Cornell also failed to capitalize going 0-for-3.
The Skating Saints will look to carry their momentum into Hamilton, N.Y. for their matchup against Colgate tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m.
