Box Score Trent Adamson hit a pair of free throws to take the lead with 22 seconds left, and stole the inbound pass with two seconds to play to secure the 65-64 win for the St. Lawrence men's basketball team over Skidmore in crucial Liberty League match-up on Friday night in Burkman Gymnasium.
The Thoroughbreds led by 10 points five minutes into the second half, but the Saints scored five straight to cut it to a two-possession ball game. After a Skidmore free throw, the Saints hit back to back shots and cut the score to a two-point game with 11:30 to play.
The Saints got their first lead of the second half with just over six minutes left to play when
Will Engelhardt hit a pair of mid-range jumpers, and led 61-58.
Skidmore responded with four straight points, to retake the lead. After the teams exchanged lay-ins, Skidmore led 64-63 with under three minutes to play. Skidmore had a chance to extend their lead in the final minutes, but missed the front end of a one and one with 42 seconds to play. They got the offensive rebound but
Luke Hicks tied the ball up, and the jumpball arrow pointed in St. Lawrence's direction.
With 22 seconds remaining,
Trent Adamson backed his man down in the paint, and got hacked on the arm going up for a reverse layup and was sent to the line. He bounced the ball three time and took a deep breath, and sunk the first. On the second shot he repeated the three bounces and deep breath, and again hit nothing but the bottom of the net, 65-64 St. Lawrence.
With seven seconds to go a Thoroughbred was again sent to the line, and again missed the front end of the one and one. Skidmore came down the offensive rebound again, and this time when the Saints tied it up, the jumpball arrow gave Skidmore the possession with two seconds to go.
The inbound pass called for a lob to the paint, but Adamson came down with the steal and dribbled out the remaining seconds.
"We got an important win against a good Skidmore team," said coach
Marques Charlton. "This league you can never take a night off and we have to come out tomorrow ready to execute to come away with a win. Overall, the guys competed well and we are looking for the same result tomorrow against Union."
Adamson finished with 20 points, 13 rebounds, four blocks and two steals.
Luke Hicks continued his good string of games with 18 points, including four shots from deep.
Trey Syroka had eight assists and six rebounds.
Harrison Eichelberger had 25 points and eight rebounds for Skidmore, including six 3-pointers. Greg Skoric had a 12 point, 13 rebound double-double.
The Saints shot 37.9-percent from the floor and 39.1-percent from deep, and hit 12 of their 17 free throws.
Skidmore shot almost 40-percent from the floor, 33-percent from deep, but hit just 5 of 12 free throws.
The Saints out-rebounded the Thoroughbreds 41-40.
