The St. Lawrence men's basketball team fell to RPI 54-45 in Troy, N.Y. on Friday night.
Will Engelhardt had 10 points, and
Trent Adamson had 10 rebounds, nine points, and four blocks to lead the Saints.
With four minutes to go in the first, RPI scored six straight points to lead by eight, their biggest lead of the half. St. Lawrence closed on an eight-to-three run, which included a pair of 3-pointers from
Luke Hicks and Engelhardt, to go into halftime trailing just 22-25.
In the second half the Engineers pushed their lead to 16 with just over six minutes to go, but
Andy Downs and Hicks hit back-to-back triples to keep the score close. With a minute to go, Adamson got his own rebound and the put back to cut the lead to seven, the closest the game had been since 13:51 in the second half. The Saints played the foul game to try to get more possessions, but RPI hit four-of-five to clinch the game 54-45.
"Two of the best field goal percentage defensives teams in the league played tonight," said head coach
Chris Downs. "They were more efficient and turned the ball over less, they deserved to win."
The Saints finished with 18 turnovers, and RPI had 14.
Mason Memmelaar led the Engineers with 22 points off of 12 shots. He also came down with nine rebounds.
Each team came down with 25 total rebounds, and the Saints came up with one more on the offensive side.
Engelhardt and Hicks each had two 3-pointers, and each team finished with six shots from beyond the arc.
