Harvard’s Late Goal Downs Saints in ECAC Conference Play

Rachel Teslak scored her first goal of the season, but Harvard scored with thirty-one seconds remaining in regulation to defeat the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in Canton, New York.

St. Lawrence for the second straight game struck early.

Just under five minutes in the first period, Anna Segedi won a battle on the midboards and passed it to Saints' defender Chloé Puddifant. She quickly passed it cross-ice to Teslak, who sent a rocket of a slapshot over Harvard goaltender Alex Pellicci's shoulder.

Teslak's snipe would be the main action of the first frame. The period had 'feeling-out' stretches of play, as this was the first meeting of the season between the two squads. The teams combined for only 10 shots-on-goal, with St. Lawrence having a 7-3 advantage.

The referees allowed physical play throughout the play, only calling two penalties, but the Saints' only penalty of the game proved costly.

Harvard went on the power-play a little over a minute into the second period. They had sustained offensive zone pressure for the entirety of the power-play. Saints' goaltender Lucy Morgan made high quality saves to keep the Crimson off the board, but Harvard would find the back of the net late in power-play. Ellie Bayard deflected home Jade Arnone's shot from the blueline to tie the game at one.

St. Lawrence would have a strong response to the Harvard goal. The Saints poured on 34 shot attempts in the period, highlighting their territorial dominance. Pellicci held the Scarlet and Brown scoreless with sharp rebound control and multiple big saves. She had 21 saves after two periods of play.

The Saints continued their offensive pressure in the third period, especially in the latter half of the frame. Pellicci and the Harvard defense absorbed the pressure and allowed the Crimson an opportunity to grab the game.

Harvard had an offensive zone faceoff with thirty-seven seconds remaining in regulation. Harvard's Kristin Della Rovere won twenty-five faceoffs but non bigger than that draw. Della Rovere won the draw to Anne Bloomer, who fed Mia Biotti. Biotti's shot from the point hit Morgan's glove and bounced behind her and into the net.

St. Lawrence was unable pull Morgan for the extra-attacker, and Harvard secured the victory.

"We have had some heartbreaking games vs. Harvard in this building and this one can be added to the list," said head coach Chris Wells. "Our players played hard for 60 minutes and we couldn't buy a goal. A handful of posts and great chances. We had over 85 attempted shots on net and dominated for long stretches in both the second and third periods."

Pellicci was strong in net and finished 36 saves. Morgan finished with 24.

St. Lawrence fell to 9-11-0 overall and 3-4-0 in conference play, while Harvard improved to 4-8-2 overall and 3-5-2, respectively.

"Unfortunately, our record doesn't indicate the amount of progress we have made and where this team is," added Wells. "We have a nice break until our next league game vs. Brown. January is going to be a busy month with a lot of games so it will be nice to get right back into the swing of it."

The Scarlet and Brown will finish up finals in the classroom and then head home for winter break. They return to play hosting Brown on Friday, January 6th at 6:00 p.m. and No. 3 Yale on Saturday, January 7th at 3:00 p.m.
