The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team out-scored Skidmore by ten in the second half, but could not complete the comeback, and dropped their first home loss of the season on Saturday afternoon 57-53.
The Saints scored just 20 first half points, and were down by 14 at half time. That lead was extended to as much as 16 in the third quarter, and with 10 minutes to play, Skidmore led 46-35.
St. Lawrence scored 11 of the first 13 points to open the final quarter, capped off by five straight from first-year
Hannah Van Dyke, and trailed 48-46 with five minutes to play. Skidmore quickly got the lead back up to seven, and it was never less than a two possession game for the rest of the way.
Senior
Olivia Middleton had a team high 11 points, including a pair of triples. Van Dyke and
Jackie Malley each also had two 3-pointers.
Olivia Barringer had eight points and eight rebounds. Nine Saints recorded at least one field goal.
The Thoroughbreds were led by Amelia Medolla's 16 point effort. Emmy Plage and Madison Meyer each added 11.
"I think Skidmore is one of the top teams in our league," said head coach
Dan Roiger, "and we weren't ready for their speed and intensity for the first 25 minutes. After that we came to play and played our best basketball of the year, but our hole was a little too big. I'm encouraged because I think our team is learning about themselves and figuring out what it will take to improve. Now is the opportunity to learn from our games and take steps forward to become a consistently competitive college basketball team, from opening tip to the end of the game."
