Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Balanced Scoring Push Saints Over Clarkson

Thirteen members of the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team scored, as the Saints topped Clarkson 64-54 in Potsdam, N.Y. on Wednesday evening.

A pair of second quarter threes from Margaret Dougher gave the Scarlet and Brown a 12-point lead, their biggest of the half, but the Golden Knights came back to trail 28-20 at the break.

Clarkson scored on two of their first three possessions coming out of halftime, but the Saints responded with a 13-point run, with 3-pointers from Hannah Van Dyke, Olivia Middleton, and Abby Doin, to go up by 19 with five minutes left in the quarter. The Golden Knights ended the period with four straight and trailed 45-30 with 10 minutes remaining.

The Saints pushed their lead to 20 three times during the final quarter, but Clarkson put the press on and went on a 10-point run to cut the lead to 10. A Shannon Rhone layup with 26 seconds remaining broke the scoreless drought, and St. Lawrence held on for the 64-54 victory.

"It was a nice game to finish up our first half of the season before our Christmas break," said head coach Dan Roiger. "Everyone got to play a lot and contribute to the team's success. We controlled the boards and made good passes to leave teammates with open shots. First half we didn't finish, but in the second half we did and gave ourselves some good looks. The team has worked hard the last couple of weeks to get better, it's been fun to watch their improvement."

While 13 Saints scored a field goal, none of them ended in double digits. Cam Roberts and Dougher each had eight off the bench, and Middleton, Van Dyke, and Doin each finished with seven. First-year Jackie Malley had eight rebounds along with a pair of triples. The Saints' bench out-scored Clarkson's 37-1.

Cassidy Dumont had 20 points for Clarkson to lead all scorers. Elaina Porter added 14 and Bella Doyle had 12. Mariah Benavides played all 40 minutes and dished five assists.
