Gosling’s Four-Point Night Powers Saints to Victory Over Dartmouth

Junior forward Julia Gosling continued her strong play with a one goal, three assist effort in the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team's 4-2 win over Dartmouth on Friday night at Appleton Arena.

The Saints had a fast start to the game and used strong transition play to grab the first goal of the game. Gosling picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and sped past a Dartmouth defender. She backhanded a pass to Shailynn Snow backdoor, who beat Big Green goaltender, Maggie Emerson.

The Gosling, Snow, and Kiley Mastel line struck again a few minutes later.

Mastel finished a tic-tac-toe passing display beating Emerson glove-side, netting her sixth goal of the season.

SLU's goaltender Lucy Morgan was sharp throughout the first with eight saves, highlighting a complete period by the Saints.

At the end of one, shots-on-goal were 10-8 in favor of the Saints.

St. Lawrence had an early opportunity to completely take control of the game with an early period power play, but Dartmouth killed off the interference penalty. Shortly after, the Big Green capitalized on their penalty-kill momentum.

Carlie Primomo fed Jenna Donohue on a two-on-one rush. Donohue was all alone in the slot and ripped a shot bar-down over Morgan's shoulder to cut the Saints lead to one.

Morgan made multiple big saves to prevent Dartmouth from tying the game in the middle frame, specifically stuffing a Dartmouth breakaway with just over six minutes remaining in the period.

Despite Dartmouth's pressure, the Saints led shots-on-goal 22- 13 after two periods.

Gosling continued to create havoc on the Big Green's defenders in the third period.

Five minutes into frame, Gosling gathered a missed shot and won a battle behind the net. She sent a shot from behind the goal-line that hit off Emerson and headed slowly towards the back. Anna Segedi tapped the skittering puck into the open net to extend the Saints lead to two.

Dartmouth almost had a fast response only two minutes after Segedi's goal, but their goal was waved off for goalie interference (incidental contact with Morgan).

Later in the period, Gosling would complete her four-point night.

She won the offensive-zone faceoff back to Saints' defender Kristina Bahl, who sent a shot from the point. Her shot hit off Emerson's glove and dropped to Gosling in-front of the net, and she batted the puck through Emerson's five-hole. Gosling's display of hand-eye coordination gave St. Lawrence a commanding three goal lead.

The Big Green would continue to fight until the final horn.

Celine Pietraszek on a two-on-one opportunity patiently skated the puck into the Saints' zone. She beat Morgan with a short-side snipe.

Late in the game, Saints' defender Katina Duscio raced back to break-up a would-be Dartmouth breakaway, and Morgan the rest of the St. Lawrence defense secured the victory.

"We were able to get off to a great start and build off our momentum from our last games," said head coach Chris Wells. "We had a few pucks bounce our way tonight and Lucy made some good stops down the stretch to preserve the win!"

Morgan finished with 20 saves, while Emerson had 29. The Saints outshot Big Green 58-38 in attempts and 33-29 in shots on goal.

"Dartmouth came hard right to the end. That's what it is like every night in the league. We had some great pressure for stretches which created some fabulous chances."

The Scarlet and Brown improved to 9-10-0 with the win, while Dartmouth fell to 3-9-0 with the loss.

St. Lawrence finishes up the 2022 portion of the season with another ECAC conference showdown with Harvard tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.
