Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Big Second Half Lifts Saints Over Union, 74-69

The St. Lawrence University men's basketball team used a 48-point second half to come from behind and top the Union Dutchmen in their league opener on Friday evening in Burkman Gymnasium. Senior Trent Adamson had a 24-point, 10-rebound double-double to anchor both ends of the court.

The Saints trailed by 12 in the waning moments of the first half, but Chris Downs came down with an offensive rebound to extend the final possession, and Tommy Flanagan hit a corner 3-pointer to go into the halftime break down 35-26.

The Scarlet and Brown came into the second half attacking the paint, and in less than six minutes the Saints led 43-40. Adamson scored seven in that span and Will Engelhardt had a pair of 3-pointers.

Union again led by three with 10 minutes to go. Engelhardt connected on a put back layup and Carter Storey hit a three to retake the lead.

The Saints pushed the lead to as many as eight over the next ten minutes, but Union continued to battle back, and a 3-pointer from Mike Manley made it a one-point game. The Saints were able to burn time with extended possessions and an offensive rebound from Engelhardt. Adamson, who missed his first two free-throws, went 4-for-4 in the second half from the line, including two in the final seconds to put the Saints up 74-69 to ice the game.

"Union is a very well coached team," said head coach Chris Downs. "Chris Murphy is as good as they get. Union had four seniors who were poised and diced our zone. Fortunately we were able to make some baskets inside. Trent Adamson really played tough and made big free throws down the stretch."

In addition to Adamson's 24, Engelhardt had 13 points and seven boards. Trey Syroka finished with seven points, six rebounds, and four assists.

Brian Noone led Union with 19 points and seven assists. Mike Manley and Aren Cummings each finished with a dozen, and Luke McGarrity had 10.

The Saints scored 42 points in the paint, compared to Union's 26. The Saints were also able to capitalize on 11 second-chance points, to Union's one.

St. Lawrence, who came into the game shooting less than 60-percent from the line, hit 13-of-18 free throws, while Union went 9-for-17 from the line.
